Hi Emily,
Your timing is interesting. I haven't personally heard of current AtoM users making use of Aeon (though they could be! hopefully someone else might respond and let us know), but we are in the process of providing estimates to an Archon user currently also using Aeon, who would like a way to integrate AtoM's clipboard with Aeon.
Aeon is one of those proprietary applications that can apparently be customized by users to a very granular level, so it's difficult to establish a single point of integration that will work broadly for many users. The client's current integration actually has 3 different workflows - once you add items from their Archon catalogue to a list (much like AtoM's clipboard), you can specify if you want to view the materials (and then you're prompted to use a calendar widget to select a date and time of your visist), order copies (at which point you're prompted to enter size / quality information for reproductions), or save them for later. Depending on the options you select, the request is passed on to a different Aeon endpoint, that receives the request and the user is prompted to create an Aeon account or log in to continue.
This involved a lot of customization in both their Archon instance, and their Archon instance, that wouldn't necessarily be the same for (or of interest to) all institutions. Instead, what we've proposed is to add the ability for AtoM to expose a JSON-LD export of the clipboard results. This would include admin options to enable/disable the feature, as well as configure where the POST of the data should be sent. The client would host an intermediary web page that would receive the data and channel it through their different workflows before passing it to the correct Aeon endpoint, depending on the options selected.
As such, you couldn't really call what we would add to AtoM, should this project move forward, an Aeon integration - it wouldn't work out of the box with Aeon without further customization to integrate the two. However, it could be used for other institutions to create their own Aeon integrations, as well as integrations with other third-party applications that can receive POST JSON data.
We've estimated this work at $7,500. I have no guarantees as to whether this will move forward at this point and be included in a future AtoM release - and if it did, institutions would still need to do further work to actually integrate the two applications. However, this would add all the necessary pieces for an institution to configure Aeon to receive AtoM Clipboard results. If this is of strong interest to your institution (or anyone else reading this!) and you might be interested in co-sponsoring this work to ensure it moves forward, please feel free to contact me off-list.
We have not explored other integration options at this time, but I thought this might be relevant to your query.
Hopefully other AtoM users with experience using Aeon might share their experience, and how they've coordinated the two applications to communicate.
Cheers,
