Salut,

We will need a few more details to be able to help you.

Some questions for you:

1) Are you installing on Linux? Our preferred flavor is Ubuntu 12.04 - we use this in both development and production
2) Are you installing directly, or using a virtual machine?
3) Are you installing locally on your own server, or are you using an external hosting provider?
4) Did you verify that you have all the necessary dependencies and requirements installed? See: https://www.ica-atom.org/doc/Minimum_requirements
5) Did you make sure that all the necessary file permssions have been configured? See: https://www.qubit-toolkit.org/wiki/Installation_-_Setting_directory_and_file_permissions
6) How much memory have you allocated? We recently had a user encounter 500 errors because she had not allocated enough memory. The absolute minimum is probably around 1GB of memory - more if you intend to have many descriptions.
7) Have you tried running the application in Debug mode? This will hopefully give you a more verbose error message, in the form of a stack trace. If you can get a stack trace, you can save it as an html page, and post it here - our developers can take a look at this error message, and they may have further suggestions for you.

1- No, am not installing on Linux. I have installed the software on Windows.
2- I have installed ICA AtoM directly on my machine.
3- As for this question, i have not installed it on a server or on any external hosting provider. can you help me do that? Show me how to installed it both on a server and on an external hosting provider so that i can choose the one that is appropriate for me.
5- how can i make the configurations? and what are the necessary ones?
6- Can you show me how to allocate the memory for the software to be functionnal? I do'nt think i did that manually. I istalled the software hoping that everything will be done while installing.
7- Can the debug mode be done on windows or Linux. Can you explain it for me because i read about the debug mode and i don't understand.

Hi there,

First of all I should mention a few things.

1) Though we know of many users who install on Windows using WAMP or XAMPP, we here at Artefactual do not test or document this kind of installation, as we build AtoM for optimal use on a Linux install - preferably Ubuntu 12.04. So the amount of support I can offer you is limited, unfortunately.

2) AtoM is intended for use on a server - if you intend to use the software in production, you should not run if off of a PC or laptop! The installation instructions we provide are geared toward this. If you are installing locally, it should only be because you are a developer intending to work with the software, or you just would like to test the software locally. If you are just testing, you might want to consider simply using our demo sites?

3) Have you considered looking into AtoM 2? It is the next generation of ICA-AtoM - more information can be found on our new AtoM website, here: https://www.accesstomemory.org/

With AtoM, we do have a Vagrant box, which can be used with VirtualBox to install a test version of the software locally on any computer. You can find instructions for its use here: https://www.accesstomemory.org/docs/2.0/admin-manual/installation/vagrant/#installation-vagrant

In general for installation, we assume that the person running the installation will be a system administrator who is familiar with some basics - this is because installation is a very difficult thing to provide generalized instructions for, as it will depend very much on the particular installation environment of the user, and we can't cover everything. Fortunately, there is a wealth of information available on the web, and for some of the more generic questions about system configuration, permissions, memory allocation, I suggest you find out all the details of your particular installation environment (type of system, type of OS, amount of memory, etc) and do some searching for tutorials on this.

If you intend to install the software on your own server, I strongly suggest you have someone (e.g. a system administrator) on hand who can offer technical support. If you do not have access to such a person, you might want to consider an external hosting provider who can handle the technical aspects for you and offer support when you need it. If you are interested, Artefactual offers several hosting options - details can be found on our website, here: http://www.artefactual.com/services/atom-2/site-hosting/

In the meantime, for ICA-AtoM and windows, I've found a few resources that might help you.

In the following posts made earlier in our user forum, I have rounded up all previous suggestions about using ICA-AToM with WAMP on Windows that other users have reported helping them - please take a look, and try following some of the suggestions there:

^ these are all different posts in the same thread, so you can read through it for context.

If you are using XAMPP instead of WAMP, some of the suggestions above may still apply, but I would also suggest searching for XAMPP in our User Forum. We also have some basic XAMPP installation suggestions for ICA-AtoM here: https://www.qubit-toolkit.org/wiki/Xampp_installation - remember, we do not regularly test for installations on non-Ubuntu installs! Hopefully other members of our community can help you out.

Different community members have also made the following YouTube videos over time, to help with WAMP/XAMPP installs:

In terms of Debug mode, if you have AtoM correctly installed, it can be used on any system - it is a matter of changing the URL of a page. for example, if you are looking at a description at an address like this:

http://my-atom-site.example.com/my-description

..then you can put the page in debug mode by adding qubit_dev.php before the slug (or permalink) at the end, like this:

http://my-atom-site.example.com/qubit_dev.php/my-description

This will give you a more verbose error report, that will help a system administrator figure out the source of the problem. More information here: https://www.qubit-toolkit.org/wiki/Debug_mode

I hope at least some of this information helps! Good luck!

Hello Dan Gillean,
Thank you very much for your help. I will try with the lots of examples you gave to solve my problems of istalling ICA AtoM on windows 7. I installed it with WAMP Server so i think following the link you suggeted will also be of a good help.
I will write you whenever i have a difficulty or problem.
Thanks once again.

One more thing i would like to know is about the email address and the password that are asked during installation.
What kind of email address do i have to give? Or is there any email address for every istallation?

Hi,

If you mean the email and password during the last steps of configuration, entered when using the web installer - this will be your email and password to log into the site when it is fully set up. You can enter any email and pass you want.
