Series System and AtoM

Hi all,

Does anyone have a good example of an archives using the series system with AtoM? I am struggling with a hierarchical fonds description for the records of a municipality that has many very different functions. I am running out of descriptive levels when trying to adhere to the fonds structure. 

Any examples or advice would be most welcome.

Hi Emily, 

The only site I can think of off the top of my head that I know is following the series system is the State Records Office of Western Australia: 

• https://archive.sro.wa.gov.au/ 

I'm sure others exist, so hopefully others might chime in if they know other examples! 

Also, don't forget that you can create whatever levels you need in AtoM, so if you need a sub-sub-sub-sub-subseries, you could create that in the Levels of description taxonomy.

Strathclyde University (https://atom.lib.strath.ac.uk/) uses a hybrid system. We use the series system for the university’s own records but hierarchical fonds for our other records.

Hello Emily

Sorry I am a little late to this discussion. The Australian National University is another implementation of AtoM using the series system though we also have archives that were described using a record group approach in the past. You can see how at AtoM is used at http://archivescollection.anu.edu.au/ and the following paper by Maggie Shapley gives an overview of initial implementation https://openresearch-repository.anu.edu.au/handle/1885/12285.
