Dear all,

First, I am wishing you all the best wishes for 2021.

We have described a fonds of photographs to the item level and each item is going to be digitalised. We would like to associate a digital object resulting from the digitalisation to each physical item described in AtoM.

Using Archivematica, we have generated a AIP from all the TIF images resulting from the digitalisation process and a DIP with corresponding JPG. However, uploading the DIP to AtoM will not attach each image to the right item-level description, as Archivematica only takes one slug where the digital objects will be uploaded.

We could generate packages (AIP/DIP) in Archivematica for each digitalised item and upload it to the right slug, but it seems to be irrelevant and overkill.

We have tried using the SWORD interface to script an import, at item level, the right JPG but it seems it requires DIP formatted packages and simple JPG cannot be easily added to a item-level slug through SWORD. We could build pseudo-DIPs for each image but that looks like a lot of work.

The REST API does not seem to expose a function to add digital objects to item based on slug.

Have we overlooked something?

Regards

Salut Robin,

Unfortunately I don't think you're overlooking anything. AtoM and Archivematica have not been developed in parallel as much as we would like and as a result there are some core integrations we would very much like to see improved, but have not had the opportunity to implement thus far.

Right now the DIP upload integration is very basic, and does not allow you to target individual DIP items to specific existing descriptions in AtoM. When it was first created, the DIP upload workflow assumed that you would run your digital objects through Archivematica first, and only arrange and describe them more fully in AtoM afterwards. In reality there are many reasons why this might not be the case, but there's no great alternative for what you're hoping to do.

There is one workaround you could explore, though it would be somewhat laborious. AtoM has a command-line task that can take a CSV as input to upload digital objects from an Archivematica DIP to AtoM. The CSV can include the slugs of target descriptions. As such, you might be able to send your DIPs to Archival storage, download them, and then manually upload them in AtoM using the task. As I said, not ideal, but it might give you the result you want? Read more about the task here:

Dear Dan,

Thank you for these clarifications. I will have a look (and a try) at the workaround you are mentioning.

Best regards
