Script for deleting / merging duplicate subjects

We are planning on running the command line script to merge duplicate subjects.

Will this result in us loosing the hierarchical relationships that have been set up?

If yes, is there any way of avoiding this?

Hi Linda, 

When you run the taxonomy:normalize task (docs here), the task does two things: 

• Move the description relations from the newest duplicate term to the original / older term
• Deletes the newest/duplicate

So, first things first - it's important to know which term is the original and which is the duplicate! 

If the original term is part of a hierarchy, its position will be preserved. However, it's important to recognize that ONLY description relations are moved from the duplicate term to the original - other data (such as related term relations, scope and source notes, use for labels) are NOT merged as part of this task. Doing so would require some kind of decision making process when there is already data in a target field - for example, the scope notes. Should two scope notes be appended together, or one overwritten? etc. Instead, we've opted just to handle information object (i.e. description) relations with this task.
