Hi there,

Yes, AtoM supports DIP upload from Archivematica. You must first configure the two instances to talk to each other in Archivematica - see:

On the AtoM side, you will need to make sure that the job scheduler has been properly installed and configured - see:

Additionally, you will need to make sure that you have turned on the qtSwordPlugin in Admin > Plugins - see:

After that, you should be ready to go. Instructions on basic DIP upload from Archivematica to AtoM can be found here:

Note that to upload to AtoM, you will need a target description created in AtoM first - you then copy the slug (the permalink, AKA, the unique part of the URL - see here for more information). AtoM will then create item-level descriptions below the target as children, and attach the digital objects in your DIP.

Archivematica 1.5 also includes the ability to perform some arrangement first - you can pull in AtoM levels of description to Archivematica, and assign them to intermediate levels you create in the arrangement pane. For more information, see:

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Hi Rodrigo,

I will let the community contribute to thoughts on what is "better," but I can certainly help outline some of the diffferences.

First, Archivematica is a digital preservation system - its focus is on providing a user interface (the dashboard) that brings together a number of open source tools supporting digital preservation activities. Essentially, Archivematica is good at creating Archival Information Packages (AIPs) for preservation and storage, and Dissemination Information Packages (DIPs - essentially, access copies) for end user access and archival arrangement and description in a separate system. The AIPs and DIPs produced are based on international standards and best practices, following the recommendations of the OAIS reference model, and they are platform agnostic and system independent - you do not need Archivematica to access your preserved content in the future. Archivematica does NOT handle the long-term storage itself, though it will interface with many filesystems, repository platforms, and external services. Similarly, we do not consider Archivematica the best place to carry out other related archival functions such as adding detailed archival description, providing end-user access, etc.

AtoM is a system for archival arrangement, description, and access, based on national and international descriptive standards. While it may act as the system of record for institutions and supports digital object upload, it is not suitable on its own for long-term digital preservation - uploaded digital objects are simply stored in a directory on the installation filesystem. This is one of the reasons we support DIP upload from AtoM, so both tools can be used together as needed.

As for ArchivesSpace - a small caveat that what follows is my own opinion, and may be misinformed as to more recent developments, so please do your own research (and other users please correct any inaccuracies)!

ArchivesSpace is more like AtoM than Archivematica. It's focus is more on description and access, though it takes a very different approach. ArchivesSpace evolved out of 2 previous U.S. open source projects, Archivists' Toolkit and Archon - and its approach to description is different. While AtoM provides templates based on known content standards such as ISAD(G), ArchivesSpace templates are based on metadata standards like EAD - in some ways, it started life as more of an EAD authoring tool. So your choice may in part depend on what your goals are, and what your archival team is most familiar with. Also, while a fully developed separate access front-end was part of the original project goals, this didn't happen at the time, though it appears to be proceeding within the ArchivesSpace community now.

There are definitely advantages to ASpace over AtoM - its codebase is far newer, it has a more robust physical location management module, some of the user interface elements (browsing and adding new terms, for example) are really nice, and its multi-repository approach is currently more complete than AtoM's. One of the key differences, beyond the content standards difference (which we see as an important one) and the fact that AtoM combines description and public access into a single system, is its focus and its community model.

As a project developed in the U.S. with specific goals, its focus has been predominantly (possibly entirely) on U.S. archival needs and functions. It has seen little international adoption as far as I know, and there is not much interest in the core membership that I am aware of in adding support for internationalization (whereas AtoM is a fully multilingual application) or better supporting the use cases and standards of different jurisdictions. Its membership model is also very different - while all AtoM resources (videos/webinars, wiki resources, user forum, documentation, presentation slides, etc) are always made freely available and released under Creative Commons licenses, key resources (such as the documentation I believe) are restricted to members only for ArchivesSpace, making it much more difficult to maintain the application without also paying the membership fee.

Finally, it is worth noting that Archivematica includes ArchivesSpace integration as well - basic support in the 1.5 version, with many enhancements for arrangement coming in the 1.6 release.

Ultimately, ArchivesSpace is a great project that continues to grow and improve, and it represents another open source alternative to proprietary solutions - so we see the Aspace project as allies and admire the work they do. I suggest you get more opinions from less biased people than myself, and do your own research. Good luck in whatever way you choose to move forward!

Hi Dan,

Sorry to answer only now. But only now I could read your enlightening answer.

Many thanks for you answers. I'm not working with Archives, but I need to study a software because we have a little archive with some funds.

Many thanks again.

Regards,
