Switched to the google group of IADA execs. Its current.

Great idea Dave. Let me reach out to Scott and see what we can schedule. Should we prepare anything as a group related to desires/expectations or just meet? Who would we like to see at the meeting from the NIADA side of things?

Executive Committee and Executive Directors,

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

I tried to include as many directors as possible on this email but I know I missed some directors. With the sudden “retirement” of NIADA CEO Voltmann I think it would be in the best interest of our members if we met with the NIADA Board to see what their vision is for the next CEO and where they intend to find that person. As association directors I think our input would be essential in guiding them to find a qualified committed individual to lead NIADA. Your thoughts?

I had a conversation with Scott (NIADA Board President). Here is what I found out:

  • The hiring process is likely to take at least 3 to 6 months
  • They want to do it right, not do it in a rush
  • They feel good about NIADA staff under Melanie's leadership to be in good shape while the hiring process proceeds
  • Scott will be proposing to the board at their board meeting on Jan 16-17 that they form a hiring committee with the following makeup
    • Limited number of board members
    • One or more AECs
    • At large dealers
    • Industry Partners
    • Maybe a legislator
    • Maybe a CEO of another large corporation
    • Members from across the nation
  • Scott would be happy to meet with us prior to his board meeting to get feedback regarding makeup of the hiring committee and the hiring process

Do we want to meet with Scott prior to Jan 16-17 board meeting?

Couple of thoughts:

I believe the “selection” committee is the NIADA Board. I don’t expect, nor would I advise, that body to relinquish such a responsibility. I believe the committee the NIADA Board should appoint, if they so desire, is a “search” committee. I realize Dave used the term “hiring” committee in his email and that may even be the term Scott Allen used, but I believe the responsibility of the appointed committee would be more inline with building a candidate profile and helping to identify qualified candidates who meet such a profile. But, that is just my guess. Ultimately, the board would and should be the selection committee.

Anyway, I am fine meeting with some representation of the NIADA Board (whoever they feel should be on the call), as long as there is an agenda. However, I do not feel I need to meet with the entire board, a selection committee, or a search committee – unless I am ask for input.

Yes Jeff, the duties as described by Scott are that of a search committee. Scott believes it is likely a search firm will be hired and that firm will work with the search committee to determine search criteria. I expect the search committee will then make an eventual recommendation to the board.

Dave,

I appreciate the update on their process but it sounds like they are traveling down the wrong road looking for another outsider to consider for the job. They made the wrong choice with Bob not because he wasn’t qualified simply because he could not connect with our industry. It will be the members of the NIADA board that will select the next CEO and I believe that person is right in front of them.

Since we as a group understand what is needed in a CEO/Executive Director to successfully lead an owner association then they should want our guidance. Remember they are car dealers and car dealers find it hard to admit they made a mistake. As a prior dealer believe me I know.

I attached the NIADA Strategic Plan which they gave us but did not fulfill for the new CEO/Directors to review. We all want what is best for our members Dave please set up the meeting.

AEC'ers,

The AEC does not have a recommendation to the NIADA Board of Directors regarding the person they should hire. That is not the function of the AEC. There may be individual State Association Executives that may want to share their opinion with the NIADA Board and/or Board President. You are free to do so.

Regarding the direction the NIADA board is heading, all I know for certain is that Scott is recommending to the board that they form a Selection Committee that will lead the charge in identifying, evaluating and recommending candidate(s) to the NIADA Board, and the Board will be the ultimate decision maker regarding hiring. We should know more about the direction they are taking after the Board meeting on January 16/17.

I will set up a meeting with Scott and the AEC to give him an opportunity to give us an idea of what he is planning to present to the Board. This will also give us an opportunity to provide input and to hear each other's perspective regarding the hiring process.

Expect to see a meeting invite in the next 24 hours, hopefully today.

Dave
