There are a few Yellow-rumped Warblers around Des Moines, but there are certainly not as many as usual this year.

I’ve seen a few pockets of them here and there.  But I’ve also been wondering!

I saw a little flock at Lake MacBride (North Liberty) on Sunday.

This morning I was hearing them call in my neighborhood on the northside of Iowa City, so I expected to see them in Hickory Hill Park, a five minute drive/fifteen minute walk away.  But when I got to Hickory Hill, I never heard or saw a single one in the 90 minutes I spent there. I was quite surprised!  Most of the trees in Hickory Hill are not really leafed out yet, though. I expect they will come with the leaves.

I saw my first Yellow-Rumped Warblers in Hickory Hill Park on April 6, so more than 2 weeks ago.  There was a group of maybe 8-10 in the triangle area and along the steep trail into the south canyon.  I've heard chips and spotted only 1 or 2 at a time in the Park since then.  On April 11 a group of folks on an Iowa City Bird Club outing encountered some in the Redbird Farms Wildlife Management Area.  There don't seem to be a lot of them around yet, though

My wife and I have seen fairly large groups for a week or so around Linn Co and Benton Co. Today we went up to the Paint Rock Unit of Yellow River State Forest looking for rattlesnakes and birding along the way. Yellow-rumps were, by far, the most common bird we saw today. Easily a few dozen over a few hours but there were more than that around. We could hear them everywhere.
