This morning at Hawkeye Wildlife Area in Johnson County, 3 PROTHONOTARY
WARBLERS were fighting over territories at the far NW corner of Round Pond.
The spot is an easy 0.7-mile walk on the dike from the parking lot. There
was also a family of EURASIAN TREE SPARROWS with fledglings at the same
location, and along the walk were a WILLOW FLYCATCHER, an ORCHARD ORIOLE,
and most surprising, a singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER.
Along Swan Lake Road just south of Round Pond, a NORTHERN BOBWHITE flushed
from the roadside and a HOODED MERGANSER flew past.
A walk to the Mallard Ponds produced several BELL'S VIREOS and WILLOW
FLYCATCHERS, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, two more ORCHARD ORIOLES, and another
NORTHERN BOBWHITE.
