Hello all,

Having been recommended Free Geek Twin Cities by several techies on YouTube and PeerTube, I have been looking for a local version. It looks like there used to be a Motor City Free Geek in Royal Oak, or Troy, depending on which listing you find.

Does anyone know if it still exists? Or if it went away, what happened?

Thanks in advance. :)

I have been wondering about that too. I don't know when it disappeared. It had to be at least ten years ago when I helped with their newsletter.

As to Motor City Free Geek: The founder/owner had a hard time with it and recently passed away after some time in a nursing home.

I worked there for some time.

Who was the owner? For the life of me, I cannot remember who I worked with on the newsletter.  Which I'm not sure ever went out as he was determined to begin issuing it from the founding even though considerable time had passed between then and when I worked for him.

Hello all, I too remember him.  We talked several times about working with the org, but by that time he was using space donated by a friend and had no real work space for volunteers.  I think I can find out his name, and will let the group know.  He died a few years ago.

Audrey,

I do remember seeing a copy of the newsletter around the Ferndale office (co-located with the Ferndale Meadery),  I don't remember if he ever had it go out.  I do remember it looked rather nice.  You did a good job.

His name is Ken (Raine) Grundberg.  We knew each other from our other associations and for many years.  He started the operation on Ryan road near 13 Mile, then moved to Ferndale (at 2 different locations), and finally to Royal Oak Township near the high school.  And was last there before the building was sold and torn down.

His son had him at a nursing home where my mother was.  He died not too long before my mom did.  Sometime in 2019 or so.  Well before COVID.

Robin
