It’s getting a bit complicated!  Expect this to last for a while – the whole project is going to take 5 – 8 years!

If you bike through Melling please read the following from Riverlink carefully…

As you’re aware, there are a number of activities taking place within the project area at the same time, and the temporary active modes paths will move throughout the programme’s construction lifecycle.

On the western side of the river, Block Rd and a portion of Pharazyn St (from just north of Marsden St) will close, and steel safety barriers will be installed on the southbound shoulder of SH2, from 500m north of the Block Rd/ Tirohanga Rd intersection to Normandale Bridge. This means the existing pedestrian crossing over the highway from Tirohanga Rd to Block Rd will be closed. Pedestrians/ cyclists from Tirohanga Rd heading towards Lower Hutt will need to use the existing crossing at the bottom of Harbour View Dr, followed by the existing crossing over SH2, before crossing the Melling Link Bridge to the eastern side of the river (or vice versa for the return journey). This is illustrated on the maps below.

On the eastern (city) side of the river, Queens Dr between Rutherford St and High St will also close in January, in addition to the northern section of the Riverbank car park. One of our initial tasks is to remove the roundabout island on Rutherford St; this work will be undertaken at night to minimise noise and traffic disruption. We anticipate this task to be completed by 19th January 2026 (WLG Anniversary weekend). At the same time, Wellington Electricity will be relocating cables on Rutherford St; this work is estimated to be completed by late February 2026. Whilst these works are being undertaken, the shared path alongside the river will remain open between Melling Link Bridge and Ewen Bridge, with pedestrians also able to use the existing footpath on Rutherford St. This is illustrated on the map below.

Once the Wellington Electricity works are complete in this area (late Feb 2026), a temporary cycle path will be installed on Rutherford St (on the opposite side of the road to PetVet), from the existing pedestrian crossing (in line with the back of Woolworth’s car park), heading north past Harvey Norman and connecting to the Melling Link Bridge. The shared path adjacent to the river will then terminate in line with the closed section of the Riverbank car park. These details are shown on the map below. Clear maps and signage will be installed on the route, with updates provided on our Facebook, website and programme newsletter.

Oh dear. It feels like every day it just gets harder for me to get to work and back !
Got a big shock when I jumped on the Melling line on my first day back at work to get off at Western Hutt (forgetting to tag off and being charged triple the fare) and finding that I had to ride through the CBD.
Will see if they can stymie an approach from the Taita end !

It was pretty good for a while, probably a year ago, as someone who commutes from Welly, with bike and or train/bike combos !
Thank you to all you folks who are putting in the hard work for us !

Cheers
Jeff

Hi Jeff - time to move back to Belmont😂. Not that we are without our own Riverlink issues!!

I've been thinking about your problem. You could take the Upper Hutt train to Waterloo station (seems bikes are allowed going N). Same cost as to Melling. The Beltway cycle path (very nice along Oxford Terrace) will take you to Naenae. Go up Walter Street (past Naenae Intermediate) - they have recently made a nice cycle path up there which takes you on the footpath up to High Street and then in front of Naenae College). There's even a marked bike crossing on High Street. Wiggle through a few streets and you'll come to Avalon Park. We're using that way a lot now as Lower Hutt has completely lost its appeal!!

After Waterloo all stations cost more, but another option would be to get off at Naenae and then use route above. Good luck

Yes I have gotten off at Taita before I think Elaine.
I am thinking I might just work more at NIWA at Greta Point instead !
