Kia ora koutou.  You may be aware that this Government is pushing ahead with the proposed Petone to Grenada route as part of its 'roads of national significance' programme.   Arguably there is the benefit of significant time saving and also cutting down traffic along SH2 between Petone and Ngauranga.  Waka Kotahi / NZTA have run information evenings and have this website with information.  The devil is in the detail that is still missing, and these look like issues that will impact on Hutt cyclists:
  • Road access to Korokoro will be severely impacted, particularly as the current road bridge by the Petone railway station may disappear.   What this means for cyclists going up to or coming down from Korokoro is not clear.
  • The access to the Korokoro stream at Cornish Street is likely to be unavailable during the construction of the new road.
  • Access from and to the new P2G road will be via Udy Street, Hutt Road and Hector Street.   The extra traffic will be a huge impact.   It will make Udy Street very unsafe for cyclists, particularly if you want to get to the sports fields, the swimming pool or Mitre 10.
The new Petone Community Association is looking to get Waka Kotahi to a meeting to discuss P2G.  I will let you know when this happening so that you can come along.   Or HCN may want to contact Waka Kotahi directly?    Definitely import to raise the above and other concerns asap.

Thanks Ron,

perhaps the best political counter would be to point out that the Cross Valley Link should be considered as an integral part of P2G, not a bolt on extra.

That would come with its own issues of course, possible grade separation for N-S streets etc but it might solve a lot of interface problems in the areas you mention, and of course get a lot of traffic especially HGV off the Esplanade.

cheers

Pete

Hi Peter.  Yes, our Petone Community Association committee will try to meet with Chris Bishop to discuss that.  We do see the Cross Valley Link as a prerequisite for P2G.

But I'm the meantime it is good to highlight impacts of the proposed route that the project team may not have properly considered.

Thanks
Ron
