Hi all.

I've been having fun writing functional programming for a few hobby projects. I live in the Huntsville area and was looking to see if there was an active community and this group is the top of the preliminary results. Most of what I can see regarding HuntFunc has gone quiet since the pandemic. I wonder if the discourse has gone quiet entirely or if it the it's just on a channel that I had yet to find.

Thanks!
Jesse

Greetings, I am an aspiring functional programmer in Huntsville. While this group may have gone silent, I am open to connecting with local functional programmers.

The group has, alas, gone so silent that these messages landed in my spam folder.

I suppose they hit spam for me as well.

Jesse and Andrew, glad you made contact.  There are a few of us around.  My summer is really busy, but I'm all for starting back up in the fall.  I've been using F# at work and can throw some slides together.

Anybody got an idea on a venue?  Maybe something at UAH?

Bubba

Hosting at UAH is a good idea. Lemme try something, and I'll report back.

I asked about the ACM being willing to host HuntFunc and got at least a positive initial response from the faculty advisor.

I was in the middle of a move over the summer when this thread received updates, I probably missed the updates. I only checked back just now in case I missed it, glad to see I checked since there is some traffic. Awesome! Let me know if I can help, I know in the past my company wasn't averse to hosting hsvpy meetups. Granted, that was before the pandemic, but I'll ask around to see if it would still be tenable.

I just spoke with Dr. Menon this evening but neglected to ask her about her earlier offer to host HuntFunc. I'll check with her tomorrow.

My company is still on restricted entry due to covid-19, but if numbers in Huntsville go down they would be amicable. (at least, according to my direct reportee)

UAH CS Department has limited availability. See below. I suggest we keep looking for a suitable venue.

Looks like the only date we have for this semester is on Sep 20, 8 pm.
We have had to delay the ACM meetings because of a class that ends at 7:30 pm in the same room.
Let me know if this works for you.

Good news. With COVID numbers being on the downswing in Huntsville, my company (Adtran) would be will to facilitate a space a space for us to meet. If this sounds amicable to the group, I would be happy to continue pursuing it. I'll try to narrow down the timeframe for earliest we could do it. Was there a schedule that worked well for HuntFunc in the past? We can try to take that into consideration.

Let me know what you guys think.

That's great news Jesse.

In the past we did a bring-your-own-lunch deal the first or second Thursday (I don't remember which) of the month.  I kind of think a Friday may work better since the work meetings around town seem to die out on Fridays.

I've got a couple topics that I'd like to get in front of the group, so I'll start work on one of them.

UAH I2C said today that they’ll also be willing to host. That gives us an option for a backup or to alternate sites.

Now that we have momentum, let’s get presenters and dates on the calendar!

I will request the first Friday of the month from UAH I2C. For 2022, that leaves
  • November 4
  • December 2
How about the talk starting at 11:30? I'll request 11 to 1 for setup, eating, questions, teardown, and socializing.

Bubba, can you be ready with F# on November 4? If not, I can talk Theoretical CS at Cracker Barrel.

Jesse, would you like to try for Adtran in December? If it falls through, we can stick with UAH.

Good deal. I have a previous commitment on November 4 -- and too many calendars!

Jesse: Will starting now be enough lead time to get Adtran approved by November 4?

It should be possible Greg, I actually already had some cogs turning in the company with our facilities team before the discussion today. Would the following Thursday (November 11th) be acceptable? I was checking our conference center for Thursday and Friday over lunch in November and found a good room available. I pre-emptively booked it with our facilities team from 11:30 to 1. If that won't work I can look for the 4th specifically.

I can give a talk on NixOS, I just need to throw some slides together. I've also been asking around for others in my company might like to participate/contribute. We have some in house Scala development. I can direct them here to give their topic ideas.

I love it when a plan comes together.
  • Thu, Nov 10 - 11:30 - Adtran - Jesse - NixOS
  • Fri, Dec 2 - 11:30 - UAH I2C - Bubba - F#

Hey guys, I've been talking with one of my colleagues in Adtran. He has a talk he would be willing to give as well. "Intro to Functional Effects". Would it be okay for us both to present on the 10th? I don't have a good feel for the flow of a HuntFunc meeting as I've never been. To that end, I'm looking for stuff like cutoff times on presentations, limits to number of presenters, etc so I can meter questions about it. From our engagement here. it seems like the process is relatively informal, but I wanted to make sure we (myself, other Adtran people) aren't putting the cart before the horse and that we are being respectful of everyone's time/processes.

I'm trying to push people to engage here (this thread) directly so I don't have to go back and forth but not getting a lot of luck so I'm trying to coordinate on behalf of a small group of interested people and meter their expectations. I think next go around I'm going to insist they come here to sign up (I just want to talk about nix!). Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Jesse

The meetings have always been casual, no cattle prods or air horns.

You’re the designated speaker and willing to share your hard-earned limelight. That should settle it.

That said, I will have to miss due to a conflict that day. If a Royal Rumble breaks out, I accept no responsibility.

Good morning! I'm May and part of Adtran Tech Team. Since this is going to be on our facility and it's our first in person event, we would like to sponsor pizza for the group if that's something you guys will be interested. :) we will have an internal announcement for this meet up. Not sure how you guys usually advertise your event, but feel free to spread the word. We only ask for a head count for in-person participants and we will also have a MS Teams link for the ones desire to attend virtually. Thank you!

I plan to attend in person. This would be my first time visiting Adtran. Where on the campus is the meeting held? Also, what are the protocols for visitors? I'm asking around at work if anyone is interested in coming with me. I'll update the count next week if any will be accompanying me.

Sincerely,

Andrew Huggins

Hi everyone,

Below you can find the address for Adtran's east tower building for where we will be meeting. For those who may not know, there are actually three Adtran buildings in research park, North, South, and East. We will be meeting at the East tower. If you are coming from Research Park Blvd and exiting onto Bradford, you will just drive straight through the intersection with Explorer Blvd. I recommend parking in the southern east tower parking lot, as it will be the easiest to get to the conference center, I have generated a GPS pin for it below as well.

As far as what to do when you get here, if you are approaching the east tower from the south, you should see a set of revolving doors. On the other side there should be a receptionist desk. They will direct you up the stairs behind the receptionist desk to the conference center. Each room is named, we will be in the room named Islandview.

965 Explorer Blvd NW, Huntsville, AL 35806

I will work with our facility to put some signs out to guide you to the right entrance. Just watch out for Adtran Event signs.

Hi Andrew,

We have a teams meeting, although I am not sure if the permissions are set appropriately. You can give this to them and see if it works, full disclosure though, I did not test it. I simply copied the link from the team's meeting I have and am hoping it works. I don't know if our organization's configuration will block access or not.

Regards,
Jesse
