Got this bizarre message (see attached image) that the Hugin setup is going to modify files used by other applications, including Firefox, VeraCrypt, Windows Explorer etc.

Anybody knows what is this about? This 64-bit windows installer was download from official site that redirected to sourceforge.

The installer installs also Visual C++ Redistributable für Visual Studio, which Hugin (and also other programs) need.
Microsoft recommends to install these files in the Windows folder so it is only installed once for several program. (But the installer takes care that the latest version is installed - e.g. when other program have already installed an old version.)
So this is not "bizarre", it is normal.

I would really prefer a portable version of any sofware rather than Windows installer. Ever since they broke System Restore...

And then would the people complain, why doesn't it works because these Visual C++ Redistributable files are missing or only in an older version available.

Additionally afaik eventual security updates for vc redist only apply to
the vc redist that is installed in the default location. We cannot
possibly want to turn them ineffective.

Kind regards,

Ever thought of "-static"?

Plus -static-libgcc and -static-libstdc++

There is one thing one has to keep in mind when using software that isn't installed in the standard locations: a virus that wants to modify it has all the rights necessary for that. But that is arguably not a problem the developer of the software has to care about.

Changing the linking from dynamic to static does not change the needed runtime.
And some of the needed runtime libs are only available as dynamic one - no static lib available.

@Gunter
I don't understand what gcc runtime libs have to do with Visual C++ runtimes…
