Simple interface is greyed out, cropping tools have gone

Hi

After working fantastically for two weeks, I seem to have come across a problem - the 'simple' interface has now disappeared, and the ability to crop images has gone too.  A google search and rummage through help and the FAQs hasn't turned anything up - any help much appreciated.  I've also tried restarting and uninstalling and reinstalling, but that didn't help either.
