Hi,

Every January, at the monthly HAL membership meeting (third Thursday at 7:00pm Eastern time), HAL holds an election for the slate of officers to conduct the business of the club for the next year.  That election will next happen on January 16, 2025.

In order to have an election, we need HAL members to step up and run for office.  The slate of elected officers consists of
  • President
  • First Vice-President
  • Second Vice President
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • Events Coordinator
The duties of each position are described in HAL's Bylaws, which can be found on our website under "For Members" ==> "HAL Documents" (member login required).  With the exception of President, the positions all require a small amount of time each month: there is a Business Meeting every month (currently held via Zoom), a small number of tasks for certain positions (preparing meeting minutes and treasurer's report, for instance), and some email discussions.  The President is somewhat busier since they are responsible for the conduct of both of the monthly meetings.  There are no requirements for specific astronomy/space science knowledge for any of the positions, so please don't hesitate to run based on that concern.

For this and every HAL election, every position is open for candidates, so I ask that you take a moment and consider helping the club and running for one of the positions.  We are now accepting nominations for the six officers listed above, and nominations will close at 7:00pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.  If you wish to run for an office, or nominate someone -- please get their concurrence first! --  please send me an email at

        hal.elec...@gmail.com

with the candidate's name, email address, and the position being sought from the list above.

The other part of an election is the act of voting for the candidates.  The HAL Bylaws require a quorum to be present at the January meeting to vote for the officers, where a quorum is specified as being 10% of the current membership; family memberships get a single vote for the whole family.  That means we need approximately 30 members or more to be present at the meeting, either in person or online.  Please make plans to participate in the January 16, 2025 meeting so that the election can be held.

HAL does not run itself, and we need people like you to volunteer to keep it running smoothly for the next year.  It's YOUR club, so help make it the club YOU want!

Thank you, and Happy Holidays!

Hi all,

I hope everyone is having a happy and safe holiday season!  As the New Year approaches, I encourage you to give some thought to helping HAL out next year by running for an office as described in my earlier email (see below for specifics).  Thanks to those of you who have already responded to my request.  This is your chance to help make it the club you want.

Just FYI, and NOT part of the annual election, there are additional, non-elected roles that could use your participation.  Specifically, we need people to help as

     Astronomical League Coordinator (ALCor)
     Librarian
     Observatory Director
     Publicity Chair
Social Media Director (Instagram and Facebook)

If you think you might be interested in one of these roles, or are interested in continuing in one of them, please contact the current HAL President, Victor Sanchez (email pres...@howardastro.org), to let him know of your interest so the new Board will be able to fill the positions quickly and keep HAL running smoothly.

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

Wayne

Hello one final time,

Now that this round of snow is over, I want to encourage everyone to consider helping HAL out in 2025 by running for a Board position.  Nominations are open until Wednesday, January 15, at 7:00pm.  See the initial email below for specifics.

I also want to encourage all members to attend the meeting on Thursday, January 16 at 7:00pm, either in person or via Zoom, so that we will have a quorum for the vote.  Note that individual members get a single vote, and family memberships also get a single vote (NOT one for every family member!).

Thanks,

Wayne Baggett
