I'm considering buying a new mac with their M1 chip.
Will Horos run on this?

Thanks!

We are all working hard to make Horos Desktop available on the new Apple Silicon macs.
This is a process that will take a while and if your business depends on Horos then we would advise NOT to get one (unless of course you plan to have multiple devices).
Horos Mobile™ is another TEMPORARY solution IF you wish to quickly view images on a new Apple Silicon mac.

Hope this helps

I assume Horos can run via Rosetta, using x86 emulation, even now? Or is this not the case?

Is it confirmed that it will works under Rosetta? I have the same situation as author. Or maybe author bought it already and can tell something about new m1 macs

I placed an order for an M1 Macbook Air but apparently there is a back order and won't receive it for another 10 days.

As one of the recent contributors to the Horos project codebase, I would assume Horos will run on an M1 mac under Rosetta, but would not expect it to do well as there are a number of issues with it just running under macOS Catalina (10.15) and Big Sur (11.x). There have not been any major code changes for 8 months. As there are a number of dependencies on libraries that are out-of-date, I suspect the behavior may be strange on M1 architectures.

I wish I had more time to do this, but have been focused on projects that pay the bills.

My suggestion is, if you work truly depends on Horos, is to use OsiriX or aycan workstation. While one may balk at the price, the funds go to paying developers to keep those products working on the latest macOS releases. OsiriX does have a cobbled version that is free.

If Horos on macOS is to continue as a viable application, there needs to be more developers helping and a more responsive project lead. I may have some free time soon, but it is not at the top of my list now.

By this I did not mean any disrespect to Purview and the developers there. They did take what was going to be a closed source solution and keep it a viable open source project. But their attention is elsewhere due to the pandemic and business projects that pay their bills, and that I totally understand. We, the users, need to step up and contribute if we want to see this project continue.

To author. Is it your M1 Macbook already there? If it is possible I'm waiting for minor or better major review and maybe some thoughts about using it and how it works with horos or Osirix if you use it. It will help me a lot and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'm aware that it's hard time for everyone and I truly understand that people have not enough time for this open source project. But I think it's good to know how new M1 machines works before I buy it if it is possible to ask someone. And of course there is Osirix and they wrote me that it will work perfectly fine with M1 but i' m not sure if it's enough to have only 8 GB of RAM or 7 cors on GPU or is it better to upgrade. Thats why any information from actual new user is valuable.
Best regards

For the first couple of years Horos will work just fine on Mac silicon via Rosetta (v2). This is a software provided by Apple (no need for users to get it from somewhere else). The only issues currently with Horos are related to Big Sur and NOT with Apple silicone macs.
After two years (which is plenty of time) Apple will no longer support Rosetta (v2). But by then the extremely capable contributors will find a solution and run Horos natively on the new macs.
Please consider supporting the developers of Horos by donating. This will have a huge impact on the time they can dedicate on this project. (https://horosproject.org/donate/).

Thank you!

Horos and Osirix have been most important part of radiology workflow. I have been these for years now. I am using Apple M1 MacBook Air for my major radiological work. I have used Horos with it, however not Osirix till the date. I will be posting a youtube video for same in few days. Till then I am figuring out ways to make optimisation for Horos for M1. Kindly wait till then. Thank you.

I ordered my M1 Macbookair on December 1st and............................I'm still waiting.
ETA is December 16th-23rd.

They say that patience is a virtue but I have my doubts.

Horos is not working on the M1 MacBook Pro that our radiologist purchased and he has switched to OsiriX Lite which works.

Horos 4.0.0 RC5 was recently released. This new version supports running on MacOS 11 Big Sur. It seems to run fine on my M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM and the 7-core GPU.

Regarding hardware specs, my advice these days is to get a minimum of 16 GB of RAM on new computers. Looking at my MacBook's memory usage right now, I see Horos using 0.7 GB (with several series open from a liver MRI study), Excel at 1 GB, Slack and Safari at 0.5 GB each, WindowServer at 1.2 GB, etc. It's too easy to hit 8 GB if you run a handful of data-intensive apps. 8 GB is probably okay for students who don't run anything other than Chrome and Google Docs. I think the 8 GB configurations exist mostly so the manufacturers can claim lower "starting" prices.

I have been running Horos v3.3.6 successfully (with some bugs) on a MacBook Air M1 w/ MacOS 11 Big Sur and 16GB RAM.  CPU architecture reports as Intel in the Activity Monitor. In my experience and to my delight, it has been gentle on the battery life.

The largest issue/bug I have is with displaying/selecting the "3D Presets Panel" within the 3D Viewer (the initial/default preset after entering the 3D Viewer area works well.  Upon selection of the presets panel, Horos spikes system resources and the application becomes unresponsive.  Force terminating the application is my only resolution.  This is 100% reproducible on my machine, but I do not know where to report this bug (should I start a new thread? Append to an existing thread?)

Open Question: Where may I obtain Horos Viewer v4.0.0 RC5 ?  I have not found a link anywhere on the website, but would like to attempt using this release candidate and see if the issue above still exists.

Thank you for the URL. The 'Download Horos' image link on the website was taking me to /download-horos/ instead which at this time does not provide download links.

I'm pleased to report that v4.0.0 RC5 performs better than v3.3.6 on the MacBook Air M1 w/ MacOS 11 Big Sur.  The bug I've been running into with the previous version has been fixed; selecting different 3D Presets no longer freezes the app.

Im using a new M1 16Gb ram.
Currently running on BigSur 11.2.3
Using Horos 4.0.0

The problem that I have found using Horos on this computer, is delay / slow scroll on 1.0 or thinner slices.
No issues on thicker slices. This problem can be improved by using 3D MPR.

I have been using Catalina on previous MacBook Pro 2019 with Intel, was not having any of this issue.

My question is:
Is the Osirix MD12 would be helpful on resolving this issue. It is quite pricy for me and Im not willing to purchase if its not going to be better.

Thank you very much

Did you try Horos RC5? We tested it, and it seems to run without major issues.

Yes, we are using OsiriX v.12 on several MacMini M1 computers, without problems.

OsiriX v.12 is optimised for M1 processors: the speed of this new M1 processor is really impressive! Can't wait to see the performance of the M2 !
