There hasn't been much news or updates since last year, and it doesn't fully work on Big Sur as of yet. I'm afraid it has become abandonware...

Unfortunately not many seem to be available to lend a hand with contributing patches. I have a pile of projects to complete that pay the bills, otherwise I would enjoy helping to keep Horos working.

If compensation is an issue, maybe consider charging a fee for the software, assuming that is possible?

FWIW, I run Horos on a Mac OS Sierra partition on my laptop, along with Dragon Dictate Medical (Mac) which was abandoned by Nuance several years ago....

I assumed that was where my monthly payments to Purview was for? I send them $10 to support their maintenance of the Horos project.

I guess not enough people were contributing. If only every user (at least in the Western Hemisphere) contributed $/£/€ 10 the project would be rocking!

Maintaining such a complex project is expensive.

I have said it many times, donations are not a good strategy. It is much more useful and efficient to put a non-abusive price on Horos and thus maintain its development ... I hoped that iCat solutions would take up the challenge, it would be very good as an integral solution together with Horos Mobile. If someone does nothing soon we will be left with nothing that works.

I'd pay to have horos.  I'd be happier with a flat payment (not monthly), and then pay for upgrades.
Up to $100 seems reasonable...after that it starts to be painful.

I paid for the manual, and I like it a lot.

It seems Big Sur is the problem. It is still working on Catalina but perhaps your demands are more sophisticated than mine
Agreed a flat payment to help the developers

I am using Horos on Big Sur (Mac mini M1 16GB RAM & MacBook Pro late 2017) and the only bug is slow scrolling on thin slices. This problem is solved when using MRP. The rest oftools are working flawlessly. I don' t use any plugin. I am paying monthly donation 10$ and I am willing to raise the amount. Since this is a professional software any fixed price lower than the robbery of Osirix (700$/ year!!!!) would instantly kill Osirix. Its simple.

I would pay $50-60 (US) annually no problem. I love Horos and what it stands for. However, it seems that the problem lies in  finding people who have the time and skills to maintain Horos. P.s. I'm an Aussie, living near Melbourne.

I'm happy to volunteer  to help maintenance - however even though I'm IT /Tech Savvy - My programming skills are very limited. The appropriate person can contact me directly and would definitely volunteer my time to help. I'm a massive advocate for such platforms.

I can help - my programming skills are extremely limited though. I'm more of a hardware fixer however do understand the fundamentals of a RIS/PACS at a hospital.

I really like Horos.  I would hate to see it die.  How much is purview per month?

thank you

I am afraid that Purview is no longer interested in Horos, otherwise it would have already solved the serious problems that we dragged on for months. I think that several of us agree that € 50 per year would be reasonable if a company is committed to offering good quality software.

Thanks for all your comments, I am from India and have few of my know clients using Osirix, have migrated to Horos due to exorbitant cost. Apple M1 Chip and BigSur is an evolution from Apple, but it play a deterrent to few opensource projects like Horos. I strongly feel a nominal paid subscription for the product or for support services (low cost no code) is a viable financial option for many opensource projects include Horos, the gestation period for such business model is long.

My suggestion could be to
1. User community can help to identify the list of problems currently in Horos on M1 and BigSur
2. Then the development community can gracefully put a cost to fix these Problems.
3. Using crowdsourcing platform the user community can raise money to fund this.

This will provide much needed relief with all the new users, on a long term - the development community can work on a Paid subscription for Product or support services.

Thank you,
Rady

Dear all,

I am a big fan of Horos - using it mainly as a sophisticated DICOM viewer and local store for teaching cases. I have previously paid a Purview technician to try to solve a layout problem and aside from the fact that the technician had no real knowledge of medical imaging (at least as regards breast imaging) the problem was not solved. I am afraid that the suggestion that Purview is no longer interested in Horos problem solving is probably true.

I for one would gladly pay a modest fee to have the software updated as needed. I have resisted changing my MacOS from 10.14.6 for the very reasons outlined over the past few months with ongoing glitches and problems with the newer Mac developments and the 64bit OS.

If someone wants to lead the charge I am sure I would not be alone in following (and paying, a modest annual fee).

If you agree to pay a modest fee for a good viewer, you can try OsiriX. It's a good alternative: no bugs, MacOS Big Sur compatibility and available for M1:

50 € / year is a modest fee.
We are > 10.000 users of Horos around the world, or more. Calculate: 50 € x 10.000 … don't you think it's enough to keep Horos alive?

You are suggesting that every user of Horos will pay a small fee.  We as software developers know that this is not the case.  Only a small percentage of users will pay a fee to keep using the software.

Of that small percentage, an even smaller percentage will pay the fee voluntarily when the source code is publicly available.

As this  has an LGPL (Lesser GNU Public License) v3.0 license, the source code must be published for free.  It is VERY hard to build a business in a competitive market when everyone else is able to use your source code and they are building products that have private source code.

No, this is a tough problem.  I believe the LGPL (copy-left) license is the biggest hurdle.

Then, if someone figures out a way to create a product that circumvents the LGPL (i.e., uses the horos code as a library in compliance with the LGPL, they will then want to do what Osirix and others have done in order to project their investment of time and capital.

Just some thoughts.

I totally agree with John's experience.

But, if people are looking for fixes to the current codebase, I do offer my services for hire.

Any updates I do are put back into the public repository, and I would work with the developers at Purview to push out any new releases via the Horos web site.

I am very skeptical about donations and I refer to the current reality: we have been using software for a long time with more and more errors, some of them that seriously affect the operation, without corrections being made in a reasonable time. And I understand, the time of a computer engineer is not free. That is why I think that it is best to pay for the software, a small fee, but if we are many users, in the end the amount of money to support Horos will be high. I understand that the limitations of open source licenses are a limitation, but will there be any option? . I consider it a mistake to ask for donations as Purview has requested and to stumble over the same stone again, it is to do the same thing as until now and so it goes ...
