Japanese input on Mac

Hi, everybody.
I'm thinking of switching from Windows to a Mac.

I went to the local Apple store, but they didn't know much about
Japanese input.

Trying out the Japanese settings, I found I could type in hiragana,
but I wasn't able to switch to romaji input. Is there a way input in
romaji? I imagine there must be, but I couldn't find it in the short
time I was there.

Or, instead of switching languages in settings, do people find it
better to order a Mac with a Japanese keyboard?


Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Short answer is yes, you can type in romaji. And there’s short cut to changing languages. I think the Japanese keyboard is laid out a little differently. I remember being frustrated with my mother’s iBook in Japan.

I use both Mac and PC, but I like Mac a lot better for Japanese input. Of course, I’ve been using the Mac for over 30 years.

I just wanted to throw my hat in here and say that you can use third-party IME tools (such as Google IME - a MUCH better experience IMO) on the Mac

You can type in kana (where each key directly corresponds to a kana character) but by far the more common approach is to use romaji input (typing in English letters and having it convert it to Japanese). You can select the one you want in the “Keyboard” preference pane.

I wouldn’t recommend this since some of the punctuation keys are in different locations than on the US keyboard, and for most people there is little benefit to having the additional keys specific to Japanese language use.

Hi Leslie,

I have used both Japanese-keyboard and US-keyboard MacBooks—I switched from Japanese to US a couple of years ago because I was buying second-hand in Canada. I don’t think it makes much of a difference. I would choose the keyboard layout that has the special characters (*, #, @, etc.) in the places you are most used to, or the keyboard layout that is easiest to buy in your location.

On the Japanese keyboard, there is key to the left of the space bar that allows you to switch between inputs. On the US keyboard, I press Command + space bar to switch between the current input source and the previous input. You can easily choose your own shortcut via System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcut -> Input Sources.

I would stick with the U.S. keyboard if you are a touch typist. 

Command-space switches between Japanese and English. 

It's easy to set up Japanese romaji input here: 

System Preferences > Language & Region > Keyboard Preferences.
