In today's patent, "ウェビングの装着" clearly maps (from context) "fastening a seat belt," and in every case in the patent works very well with this expression.
Is anyone aware of any reason why this should not be translated as "fastening the seat belt"? (The context is a safety device in a passenger car, involving checking the ウェビングの装着 by a switch in the buckle that turns ON if the tongue is inserted into the buckle.)
I guess the question is, to those skilled in the art, is the strap of the seat belt apparatus commonly referred to as "webbing" (when referring to the functional component, as opposed to specifying the material), or is it called a "seat belt" (like it is for the rest of us)?
In this regard, I see what seems like very, very bad translations in Weblio:

Ummm... "To enable a seat belt to be gripped easily, and to fasten a seat belt more quickly."

I am not sure that you mean by ' "ウェビングの装着" clearly maps (from context) "fastening a seat belt" '. What is the context?
ウェビングが装着されるまでの時間 would be conceptually equivalent to "the time it
takes to fasten a seat belt", while in the case of
"ウェビングを容易に把持できる", translating ウェビング as seat belt is questionable, since one could by the same logic also translate タング、バックル, etc. (i.e. other components of a シートベルト) as "seat belt".
In the example of ウェビングの装着感 above, "fastening a seat belt" would
not be appropriate as it would tend to imply e.g. how it feels to
engage the tongue into the buckle, rather than how the webbing
feels when worn.

I always learn something from you, Herman.
I especially like the observation you made at the very end. Very astute!
