Hi All,

What is your best practice to receive overseas payment from Japan if you don't have a Japanese bank account or want to move away from Paypal?

I am looking for something that is trivial enough that I can convince Japanese clients to switch.

Thank you,
Balazs Oroszlany

Both JAT and a new client of mine based in Japan have used Wise, which
puts money directly into my U.S. bank account overnight less no fees on
my end--a pleasant surprise. I can't speak to the money-sending side,
though.

Dear Balazs,

Another option is a Payoneer local account: https://www.payoneer.com/solutions/global-payment-service/. Clients send the money to a local Japanese bank account that is routed to your Payoneer account. However, clients must be 法人, and you often are required to provide information (the job invoice, the client's 法人番号 and address, etc.) before you can withdraw the money.

Another issue is that the bank account has Payoneer's name attached to it. Some clients (especially universities) will only make payments to a bank account with your name attached.

Best,
Dylan

I use both Paypal and Wise for Business. I have a blog post discussing the advantages and disadvantages at https://localization.ninja/review-of-transferwise-for-business/
Dylan, you are correct that Wise does not currently offer bank details for JPY.

Dear All,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

It looks like we still have to wait until Wise could receive domestic bank transfers.

Best regards,
Balazs
