Hello and Namaskar to everyone, I'm a new member in this group. I have some questions tumbling in my mind about hindu God Shri Vishnu. Kindly tell me what is that U sign on the forehead of Shri Vishnu called and what is that for? What is the importance of that sign, because I have never seen any of Shri vishnu's  image without that bindi like sign.
Thank you

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urdhva_Pundra  has details on this: Urdhava Pundra has been part of the Vaishnava tradition, just like Tripundra has been part of the Shaiva tradition. The Vasudeva Upanishad, a Vaishnava tradition text, explains the significance of three vertical lines in Urdhva Pundra Tilaka to be a reminder of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva; the Vedic scriptures - Rigveda, Yajurveda and Samaveda; three worlds Bhu, Bhuva, Svar; the three syllables of Om - A, U, M; three states of consciousness - awake, dream sleep, deep sleep; three realities - Maya, Brahman and Atman; the three bodies - Sthula, Sukshma, and Karana.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Girish, your reply surely helped me understand the answer I asked about, but still there is one thing I didn't get.
Please tell me if Shri Vishnu himself wears the (Urdhava Pundra) on his own forehead all the time or not?
I'll be grateful to have your reply again. I'm asking this vary question because I'm confused when I see almost every single drawing of Shri Vishnu with that tillak.

Sir
In our traditions man is allowed to imagine God in any form he pleases.
So every man (or woman) have their own perception of what God would like.
So each deity was decorated as per the prevailing local traditions.
You will observe that this Urdhva-Pundra mark on Vishnu is not uniform throughout India.
The Divine does not need any such markings, but we in our devotion assign these things to the Divine.

Hello,

God is with form and with out form and god you can call as vishnu /jesus/ or any other name and is infinite when the infinite when forms through time space and causation then this is universe is formed.

Sri Ramakrishna is none other than Sri Maha Vishnu if you can sincerely pray and you can get his vision . Why should you just stop at some of the external symbols in one of his known finite forms instead pray and have his vision as per your desired form .

Thanks
Ever your in the love.

Thanks for starting this very nice discussion indeed !

>>I'll be grateful to have your reply again. I'm asking this vary question because I'm confused when I see almost every single drawing of Shri Vishnu with that tillak.

Could not understand why this confusion is. Can't the deity and the devotee wear the similar kind of symbols?

>>Please tell me if Shri Vishnu himself wears the (Urdhava Pundra) on his own forehead all the time or not?

Yes, Lord Vishnu always wears the Urdhva Pundra with sandalwood paste. Don't we see this on the idol of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Venkatesh and Ranganatha Swami and all other idols of Sri Vishnu (and also idols of Lord Krishna everywhere).

The devotees of Lord Vishnu always wear this Urdhva Pundra as well. As Sri Thakur told that there is no difference among Bhagabat (the book SriMad Bhagavatam), Bhakta (the devotees) and Bhagavan (Lord Himself), if one reads the book SriMad Bhagavatam one realises that evidently. Would really recommend to read the Srimad Bhagavatam. There is some description about that I remember, but at the present moment I could not reach to that reference (if I get will certainly post). It was written somewhere that in the VishnuLoka (abode of Sri Vishnu) everybody looks like Sri Vishnu, and all certainly wear Urdhava Pundra, and Sri Vishnu Himself as well.

But like the others emphasised: in the religion it is always stressed on to go beyond the idol worship. In case you read the lecture of Swami Vivekananda in London that was accounted by Sister Nivedita herself. He gave a description how a devotee passes through many phases: after idol worship then it come to "Shaligram sheela" then it goes further to the worship of formless God. This the essence of Hinduism.

The Master makes a humorous observation on this in Chapter 24 of the Gospel:

| The Master noticed that the Tantrik worshipper had a vermilion mark on his forehead, and smilingly said, "I see he is branded."

for this reason, i remove all "branding" when i go outside; one can "meditate under the mosquito net" :-)
