Hello and Happy Memorial Day Spinners
I want to let you know about our plans for the July Guild Meeting. We will be meeting at the Woodstock Farm Bureau instead of at the Library. Address information will be given closer to the time of the meeting.
We will be doing a yarn dyeing day. Our system will be similar to the system that Arcane Fibre Works uses. Here is one of his video sites to give you an idea of what you might want to do. He has a number of videos out there showing different colorways that he has done.

Arcane uses a medium immersion system, but because I don’t think many of us are going to want to dye several skeins the same color, we will be using a low immersion system. All that will be explained at the time of the meeting. But, for now, what you need to think about is the yarn you will want to dye.
We will be using the acid dyes that work well with protein fiber rather than cellulose. So, wool from sheep, alpaca, llama, angora and mohair fibers all work well. Silk would also work well. You can spin your own yarn or purchase yarn to dye from sites such as Knit Picks or Webs. I would suggest that if you are spinning yarns that you would make them into approximately 4oz skeins. This will make it easier for us to decide how much dye to put into the fiber.
The part of the process that may take the most time is setting the dye by heating the yarn for a period of time. This will probably be the deciding factor on how many skeins you can get dyed in our time slot. I am thinking that probably three dye batched would work. If you are dyeing a couple of skeins the same color, that would be one dye batch. I have not done this dyeing with a group before, so bear with me. We will do the best we can to get all the yarns sett, but if necessary you may have to finish setting your yarn at home. We will have an oven we can use, and I have a number of burners/crock pots and a nesco cooker that we will use.
Another dye method that you might want to consider is to speckle your yarn, Here is one site that shows you that methods. You can do this on a plain white yarn, or give your yarn a base color and then add speckles or small areas of color to it. Give this a little thought as it will determine if you presoak your yarn in plain water or a vinegar water solution ahead of time.
I will send you information on the supplies you will need to bring prior to the meeting. I will also, at that time, ask if you are planning to attend so that I can plan appropriately.
I am looking forward to seeing all the wonderful color combinations that will appear before our eyes.
Sharon
