I've enjoyed reading this thread, everyone. Here are some of my thoughts.
I'm not sure special glasses would do the trick. However, I have something that I think Toni gave me years ago that might be a good hint. It's a little button like a political campaign button, but what it says is "Spinning Out of Control." Also, when we had a Guild show some years back, Gary and I made prizes that were tiny wooden drop spindles with colored yarn on them (blue, red, or yellow like fair ribbons) that can be worn as a lapel or collar pin. He may even have some of them still lying around here. Either one makes a good marker. Also, wearing handmade items helps do it. I posted a photo of my current sock project (one done, the other in progress) to my Mastodon social media account (@altivo@plush city) and was surprised at responses I got from other knitters, including men I didn't know were involved in that. Be proud of your work and find out who comes out of the woodwork or closet.
Barb has it right. Raw fleece is full of stuff you don't want in your finished yarn. Don't be afraid to discard fiber that is stained, smelly, or otherwise unsuitable. Believe me, there's more good fiber in the world. You'll never run out.
We were sorry to miss the sock knitting machine discussion and show. Gary would be very interested. But our dog Ares is in obedience class at that time on Saturday, and he's doing quite well so that was a higher priority. Also, he looks forward so much to going. I don't know how he can tell it's Saturday, but he knows, and by 9:30 or so he starts pacing and whining any time either of us goes out of the house and near the cars. Today's session was the last practice before the test for his third certificate, "Canine Good Citizen - Urban." That involves stuff like going up and down in an elevator, or passing through crowds that include other leashed dogs, or stopping at a curb and waiting until told he can cross the road.
Oh, and one more thing. The "
hollow-tre...@googlegroups.com" mailing list is indeed still operational. I see some of you are using it. And I get asked to "approve" messages sent by someone who hasn't previously been approved. This is an anti-spam measure that keeps messages about your "expired car warranty" or other junk like that from getting onto the list. I do grant approval automatically but it may take a few hours for me to see that it is needed. If you have difficulty getting messages onto the list, let me know and I'll look into it.
