मुहावरा ऐसे शब्दों का समूह है, जो अपने साधारण अर्थ को छोड़कर किसी विशेष अर्थ क्रो प्रकट करता है अर्थात जो वाक्यांश  सामान्य अर्थ को छोड़कर किसी विशेष अर्थ का बोध कराते हैं, वे मुहावरे कहलाते हैं।

मुहावरे भाषा को रोचक और  प्रभावशाली बनाते  हैं |

उदाहरण के लिए 'पेट में चूहे कूदना' एक मुहावरा है। इसका वास्तविक अर्थ 'पेट में चूहे कूदने' से नहीं है, बल्कि इसका अर्थ है

बहुत भूख लगना ।

इसी प्रकार 'खिचडी पका-ना"' मुहावरे का अर्थ दाल-चावल की खिचडी’ पकाना नहीं हैं,बल्कि 'गुप्त रूप से सलाह करना' है तात्पर्य यह है कि मुहावरे का उपयोग वाक्य के प्रसंग में होता है, स्वतंत्र रूप में नहीं |
