HCRs riding MTL Saturday,
I see a number of newer riders signed up for tomorrow's 200K and wanted to give a heads up about the store on the corner, M&M food mart. Though we'd never do it anywhere in Austin, it's common practice on a brevet just to lean your bike outside the C-store, even when it's just you, with no one to watch your bike. At this particular store, I'd discourage solo riders from leaving their bikes unattended, it's a bit sketchy there and consistently so. Pairs of riders take turns, is standard practice here. Yes, you could try to bring your bike inside, but this store is small, it's not a big ol' Cefco with a teenage kid at the register who doesn't care about anything besides what he's doing when he gets off work--so, I don't suggest it. Instead, for solo riders pulling in to Taylor I suggest going further up Main street, crossing the bridge over the railroad tracks, head a few blocks and there's a no frills Shell station to your left. Hit this store again on your way back if you're solo. If you're not trying to set a time trial record on the course, I highly recommend bypassing both stores on the way out, continue on course and stop at Gonzales Tacos on your right a few blocks further into the route. Get a Mexican Coke, might have to pay for bottled water, but tacos are the bomb. On your way to Lexington you pass through a nothing place called Shiloh, there's a church just a ways to your right with a spigot to the left of the front door, file that away for the future, likely won't need it tomorrow. And as you pass through Lexington on the neighborhood road there's a gate you have to haul your bike over.
Russ, I take it you'll share this with new folks who may not be in this Google group? Have a great ride y'all. Good day to test out your sexy new Gore-Tex jackets!
