Last Friday (7/12) I was attempting to set up static ip addresses on my HL2 & Laptop-based Quisk. I tried various combinations using the IP related fields: “Hermes Known IP”, “IP Change”, “Eeprom IP usage”, “Eeprom IP Address”. While it appeared that the static address in the HL2 took, Quisk was never able to connect using static addresses.

I was successful at getting APIPA to work (269.254.x.x addresses) but never on static. I was routinely able to get quisk to find and control the hl2 using APIPA.

Late Friday I shut down the HL2.

Early this week I tried again but found I can no longer connect via ethernet to the hl2. I see the link light and some activity light but Quisk never finds the HL2. Also, the frequency of the activity light is much diminished from what I’ve seen before.

Also, several fields that I was seeing last Friday no longer appear in the Config | HL2 tab. Specifically “Eeprom IP Usage”, “Eeprom MAC usage”, “Eeprom IP address”, “Eeprom MAC Address” are missing.

Hermes code version and board ID have not changed.

What could be wrong? Is there a way to reset the HL2 and/or rewrite eeprom? Do I need to rewrite the FPGA (without ethernet since it won’t connect). Do I need to blow away and reinstall quisk (I’m on version 4.2.31; current version is 4.2.35 so I’m pretty up to date).

This page in the Wiki has a full workflow for troubleshooting network issues, but this specific section outlines how to boot from the factory image (and also use default IP settings)...

I've had good success setting fixed MAC addresses with SparkSDR. I've not tried the other options. I have 2 HL2 on my network, so I set them both to non-default MAC addresses and then use DHCP reservations in my router to assign specific IP addresses to each one.

Some questions:  Are you trying to connect with an ethernet cable directly between your PC and the HL2?  Or with a router in between?  What is the IP address of your PC and router?  And what IP did you try to set as the new static IP for the HL2?  73, Ron, N6YWU

The "EEPROM" items will not be shown until Quisk finds the HL2 because they can not be read or written, and they are not part of the Hermes 1 protocol. Since your HL2 can not be found, the EEPROM items do not appear.

The most basic tool is "ping". Try pinging a few likely addresses to see if you can find your HL2.

The "IP Change" option should not be used with the HL2. It is part of the Hermes Protocol 1. Use the EEPROM items instead.
The "Hermes Known IP" is only useful if the default UDP broadcast method can not be used.
APIPA is useful if DHCP can not be used. But why doesn't DHCP work on your network?

It is possible you changed your HL2 IP address something your PC can not reach. Are you using Windows? Is DHCP unavailable because you are directly connected to your PC and don't use a router? If you assigned a non-APIPA address, is it an address that your PC can reach? Try pinging the APIPA address. Network problems are common, and I am sure people here can figure it out.

Hi Rob,

Please try factory recovery boot as described here:

If you can then connect, please post a screenshot of your Quisk settings, including the connected IP at the top of the window.

You don't need to reprogram the FPGA. The fixed IP and MAC settings are stored in a separate eeprom.

Thanks for all the responses on this issue. I found the reset procedure and it worked. I was able to get the HL2 to use DHCP and was then able to update the configuration. I reset the eeprom ip address fields and all’s good.

As for DHCP on my network – it works. For flexibility (and for personal edification) I wanted to be able to configure the HL2 for APIPA and for static ip addresses. I sometimes operate mobile or semi-mobile and have no router or switch when doing so; in these cases I direct connect my laptop and the HL2. So I was trying to make sure I know how to get into those modes and back out.

As for not seeing the eeprom IP, I think that was a subnet mask issue. Will do some more experiments to verify that.

But everything is working fine and I’m relieved I managed not to brick the HL2. Appreciate all the responses.
