My HL2 was delivered 3 years ago with gateware 7.3 (Makerfabs invoice #41861 dated 28/07/2021) and I see on the github pages that there are new versions of the gateware (boards hl2b2, hl2b2 to 4, hl2b5up,... I don't understand what these references are. Would it be useful or necessary to upgrade?

I use mainly my HL2 with SparkSDR and Quisk with a Windows 11 laptop. I use a iambic paddle with a keyer and a Logitech USB headset, feeding an EFHW antenna or an Alexloop antenna, both being precisely set with a NanoVNA. My HL2 and my computer are connected through a v6 Ethernet cable.

The only real answer is to look at the release notes for the interim versions to see if they address any gripes you have with your current version:

The number after the "b" refers to the board build number of your HL2. The correct version for your board will always be hl2b5up. Then after that, there are variants of the gateware for multiple receiver versions that allow receive only use with more than 4 receive "slices". If you do not do multiband receive skimming then no need to worry about these variants.

Having said all that, there's a small "issue" that a recent gateware update (74p2) solved. That is that if (CW key) keying the TX with the front panel key jack (Key/PTT jack tip) in voice modes, then it resulted in continuous carrier, not keyed. See here:

This has been solved in this gateware (74p2 linked below) so that CW keying the tip results in correct CW character keying regardless of the mode set:
