I know I will need the Hermes-Lite board, case and N2ADR but do I need/want the PCBA/ Turnkey PCB Assembly Service? I just want to make sure I get the needed parts the first time.

Hi Larry,

Unless you are an avid and experienced surface mount assembler, I'd recommend the preassembled HL2, enclosure and N2ADR from makerfabs:

I just ordered exactly 3 items from Makerfabs: a Hermes Lite 2 board, an N2ADR board, and the metal enclosure.  Took one week to ship to California.

The kit came with 8 small screws for the front and back plates, and a jumper PCB to go between the HL2 board and the N2ADR board.

Assembly required me to acquire separately (local hardware store plus Amazon) an M3 screw and nut, some fine grit sandpaper, and some thermal paste.
I used a hand drill for the one extra screw hole needed, but a drill press would have worked better.
Connecting the finished assembly required an ethernet cable, and a 5.5/2.1 mm barrel connector for wiring from my 12V+ power supply.

Extras:
I also added 4 small rubber feet to the bottom of the case to keep the case from scratching or sliding on my desk.
I also purchased an SMA 30 dB attenuator and a short SMA jumper so I could (re)run the hl2setup board test app.
Everything worked pretty much first time (except my own software, which likely still has a rain forest full of bugs).

I'm running my HL2 from a headless Raspberry Pi 3B+ and from my iPad.
I loaned a second HL2 to a friend who is running it from his MacBook, beta testing my SDR app (but IIRC also trying out linHPSDR and Spark).

On wired ethernet, everything runs fine.  Over Wifi, Tx is very iffy.

You will not regret it..

Thinking of selling my elad duo due to fact the hl2 works as well if not better..( really it does..expensive learning experience!)
On paper it should not..but!! (12 bit re 16 bit adc.)

My hl2 on windows 10 on my GOOD pc worked out of the box..( once i had replaced the shite Chinese $1 mouse with a decent on that does not react to rf!)

Add a fan to hl2 enclosure..tiny fan with filtering..(40mm is perfect, fits inside case.)

One thing..expect days of frustration if not using proven software and gateway..BUT hey hl2 is not about buying a flex etc!!

Makerfabs by the way do an excellent job..

Simon..

High praise indeed Simon regarding comparison with your beloved Elad!

Larry, my experience is like Simon's in that I find the HL2 is truly excellent and offers performance far above it's price point and easily compares or exceeds performance of many/most of the current "black boxes".

Also Simon has very modestly not mentioned his own excellent software package SDR Console. If you are more of an operator than an experimenter (I admit that is me) then SDRC offers a superb "out of the box" companion to the HL2. It "just works" as they say, and you can be on the air in very short order making contacts. I had my first SSB contact within one hour of starting to assemble HL2/N2ADR/Box and panels as they arrived from Makerfabs so putting together HL2 parts really is no big deal if you just take a read through he Wiki first:

If you are a little more of an experimenter then Quisk and SparkSDR offer much to play with (multiple receiver slices, QuiskVNA vector analyzer + much more) but personally I have not had enough time to play and have pretty much stuck with SDRC although I do use Spark to flash new versions of Gateware when needed.

Just for information I have not bothered with a fan and not had any heat issues yet but I was careful to make sure good thermal contact of PA board with (non-painted) case rail using plenty thermal compound.

To echo Simon, you most certainly will not regret it.

Simon,

If you're UK / EU based and do decide to sell your DUO please give me a prod. I'm down Cornwall way...

Oh no...... another faux pas by me. Many apologies Simon and Simon. I think I will set myself a rule to wait 10 mins after composing message to insert a "gibberish filter" to my posts before I push the Go button. My excuse (a poor one) is that I always seem to be on the verge of rushing off to do another job so in too much of a hurry. I will try harder!

Well that was quick, I ordered on the 24th and got it today. Paid with PayPal. I will do the mod for the M3 but I plan on trying to use it go driving a transverter.

Hope it is OK to tag on to this thread too. I also just got my HL2 and have played with it a bit. Still trying to figure out how I get WSJT-X working with it. Also, wondering about attaching a small amp to it. I don't need a step by step per se but just point me in the right direction.

Steve,

The quick start was most helpful in getting software running like Quisk and PowerSDR.

Best Regards,
Don - N5SKT

Hi Don,

All the documentation is on the wiki, github and in this group. You can find links to everything from www.hermeslite.com

Documentation is a community effort, and only requires a free github account to contribute.

Hi Paul,
I'd not seen that page, neat. With recent versions of spark it is probably easier to use the digiu mode.

Hi Paul,
digiu it is just the same as usb but the audio and rigcntrl controls are displayed in the main bit so you don't need to open settings. I've not read through the wiki for a while, there is obviously some good new stuff there, I'll give it a proper read.

Hi Allen,

These are standard metric M3 screws. In the US, Ace hardware has a good selection of small metric screws.
