Me (HS0ZPX also ON7OFF) and John (ON4EI) will organise a special Hermes Lite 2 net this Saturday between 17h00 UTC and 19h00 UTC on 14.295 Mhz (+/- 15Khz depending how busy the band will be).

You are invited to join us this special Hermes Lite 2 meetup and show your audio quality of your station.

I will be livestreaming from Thailand using 5k RX and TX for testing purposes.

Hope to meet you this Saturday, March 15th 2025.

Nice will certainly try - we have a big storm event possibly Sat so that may kill a lot of the Midwest/East coast  US stations -

Kurt you guys should also join the discord server to post these as well there are a lot of Hermes users on the  Everything SDR& More discord group-

And majority of the Hermes users in that group are ESSB  users 4-8K and really nice sounding stations cheers

Hi,

I saw the youtube video so I knew what this was the moment I saw the subject :-)

I'm not a huge fan of routine use of eSSB especially for DX or contesting (I have to admit I don't hear that much of a benefit for the bandwidth and the lower power efficiency), but I have no issue with testing or occasional use.

I'd love to hear something like this on 10m FM one day.

This will be late afternoon for me so likely there will be noise on 20m making real DX difficult (Poland - Thailand), but I'll try. 20m has been the best for me 2-3h past sunset for some reason.

I use 5k audio every day when I'm on. sometimes wider when the band is not heavily used. I don't understand how others say they can't tell a big difference between 2.9 and 5k unless the speakers or headphones do not have a good range.
If the storms on the east coast USA hold off I'll be on Kurt.

Agree wider open it up!!

There is a big difference

There is a difference between 3 -4k
Another more when you open wider

But when you use cheap speakers or headphones well then that might be a part of problem.

I typically run 4-8 k audio depending on band conditions and if you got a full bandwidth of available audio spectrum balanced to do so there isn't much power loses

Hi gents,
I am unsure about regulations in other countries. The IARU allows 2.7k max on all frequencies lower than 29MHz. In Germany this is in the govermental rules for Hamradio. However I never heard about complaints from official sides.

regards

Juergen DL4JY

In US it's open to your judgement or best practices as to not disrupt others

There no no limit in the US
Despite what many may think.

Jürgen,

The discussion about national rules and regulations is completely irrelevant. Anyone who uses this as an excuse either simply has no idea how amateur radio is organized internationally, or is deliberately ignoring our self-imposed rules and trampling on the ham spirit. Of course, national restrictions take precedence, and IARU rules don't override them. However, no national regulation on TX bandwidth by any means overrides IARU band plans. This whole discussion, however, is completely irrelevant to a serious OM. They don't do anything that unnecessarily consumes bandwidth or could disturb others. A ham doesn't need this cross-pollination and acting great! They proudly represent their own, personal, and unique call sign! But surely not to show others what a great hero they are for managing to turn up the TX BW in the menu...
Bragging. Nothing but mindless bragging.

Do you only operate within the USA? What do our elected IARU representatives meet for? They're trying to harmonize the various national regulations so that we can ALL get the most out of our bands with as little interference as possible. This can only be achieved by dividing the world into three regions, each with its own band plan. I can assure you, however, that none of the band plans lists a TX BW for J3E greater than 2.7 kHz. Not to mention the technical nonsense that's being abused here.

@DH1TT  challenge accepted as stated from below response and here is your ruling for the USA ( so your incorrect regarding all regions sorry)

@DH1TT yep looks like the above has no 2.9 limitations for that region either, so I am awaiting to be assured..

and the docket I posted was in regards as shown if you fully looked (appears you have not) at it which was SSB / AKA J3E clearly ruled experimental and no limitation, here in USA

its not my intent to turn this into a argument but facts are facts! and what you claim doesn't apply to operators in the US and from the list above certain license classes in Canada (RAC listing)

It's about orderly interaction, across national borders. Not about what the FCC may not explicitly prohibit. That's exactly what IARU band plans exist for. Is it really so difficult to understand? Come on, Richard. Of course not. You're just one of those people who doesn't care?

sorry it was not my intention to start WW3.

However is the 6khz regulation for Canada probably to allow AM on certain bandy. Especially under the light of cold polar winters, where you are heating your shack with a few 3z500...

That was awesome Juergen!   Sometimes a little war helps get the blood pumping. I think others get the wrong impression and make assumptions about people being "mindless" when in fact to get your audio setup it takes lots of work.

Juergen,  The 6khz regulation we must follow in Canada is bandwidth period.  The mode doesn't matter.  I've seen plenty of non-linear stations exceed that even when TX 3khz SSB.  20 meters is packed today.  Stations packed on top of each other not even 2khz apart.

if you habe followed discussions in the past (20 years +) the reasoning for larger bandwidth on lower RF bands was always AM. And clearly it is not limited to AM.
I personally would like to use AM from time to time. where reasonable. But local regulations don't allow this.

Ron, you nailed it

Despite what Lawrence's comments in his post were.  Every single essb operator I know of is a whole lot more courteous than the majority of other ham operators when it comes to bandwidth on use to begin with. We always look above and below to make sure when we do open up. There's nobody in our passband to start with.

It's the guys that intentionally place themselves in that paasband after we start and we're there beforehand that start the bitching and moaning!

Because they think they own a frequency  for some net or other reason and it wasn't occupied when we started up.

Juergen,  yes I appreciate that.  From a licensing stand point 6khz is 6khz no matter the mode.   Personally I TX 2.9k.  Unless you have arranged to QSO with someone at a wider bandwidth not much point tossing a random 4-6k signal out there.  I've heard some phenomenal stations at 3k.

Rick, I appreciate that.  There are many variables though. Bands fade in and out and propagation changes.  I've heard these arguments between stations. I've seen the situations you describe and I've seen ESSB stations fire up right over top of another station.  Lot's of stations with big amps and small antennas or high local noise.  I work a very busy net. It's generally a 90 minute long pile up.  Despite that amount of traffic on contest weekends we will inevitably have a station start calling CQ over top of the net when the clock hits 00:00 UTC. Some people just don't like to share.
