How many HL2 owners are actually on the air?

So I have a buddy who says he's yet to encounter any YouTube videos showing the HL2 on the air, a SOTA or POTA operation or just showcasing it on the air. We see all sorts of vids of every other rig being used on the air, but HL2 there's none or close to it.  So, is anyone willing to do a video of them using the HL2 and doing a review of it? What about using it for CW and digital? Any takers?

So Lou, you've just proven my point. None of these videos actually show the HL2 transmitting, only receive. And that's the issue. I looked at the videos and the playlist where the HL2 first appears about 3 years ago but none of them are holding a QSO with anybody, it's just loading software, configuring software and receiving other people's transmissions.

So again I'm asking if anyone is willing to post an actual QSO of their using the HL2? How does it play? Is it a smooth operation or fraught with show stoppers?

I do not make videos of QSOs but I can say I use my 2 HL2s most every day, usually running 24/7.  One on a 2M transverter, the other on HF. 

 

This summer for a 1 month expedition (supporting deep submersible dives to the Titanic) I took along my Windows tablet and the HF 5W HL2 and made FT8 contacts around the world easy. Used an MP-1 vertical clamped to a container roof located on the back cargo deck aboard an oil rig ship out of St Johns, NF, Canada.  Operated in port and 400 miles offshore floating over the Titanic.  Simple setup once you get your software setup with virtual audio cables.  Travels very easy being so compact. 

 

At home I use the 2M transverter connected HL2 for SSB chat on 144.200 and listened to FM repeater chatter for background noise.  I usually use a PiHPSDR with a standard hand mic for the control+audio side.  People report good audio and not far off my big K3-based system.  The choice of mic and software config on the host computer is your main factors at play.   A USB mic on a host computer works fine also. 

 

The only CW I do is for occasional VHF+ weak signal work when voice does not make the grade. One of my PiHPSDRs I built in a Teensy CWKeyer spawned from the efforts of several members on this forum and it seems to do CW fine for me.  

 

I have other SDRs including my own Teensy based version driving a RS-HFIQ 5W SDR transceiver.  In my view they all “play” about the same, it is more about the software and mic/keyer on the host and how you configure it, the RF hardware is pretty transparent and reliable I find.  If you are a CW die hard then it pays to investigate how you will do that as each SDR and app combo handle it somewhat differently.

 

BTW, the ship I was on was built in Norway about 5 years ago.   I guess I missed the bar codes 😊

Those of us using the HL2 to make contacts are to busy logging our QSOs to upload videos to YouTube. We live in a strange world if something that is not documented in a YouTube video, its existence is questioned … ;)

But seriously, I use my HL2 every day. When I am home, it’s my digital station, and when I am traveling, it’s the station that I operate remotely using Mumble for remote audio. I use SparkSDR and use its text to CW feature to make CW contacts in addition to SSB using Mumble on my phone. This is with the HL2 hooked up to a HR50 amplifier. I’ve also used it with an external keyer connected to the HL2 for CW.

i have 2 Hermes Transceiver and one is the HL2 , the other  one is a Hermes using a FPGA evaluation kit from Altera,an ethernetboard from Waveshare.

here a video among others using the HL2 CW mode with a Homebrew tube amplifier giving me about 100W . The antenna is a 23m long EFHW antenna.

i am using a homemade K3NG CW Keyer . To control the HL2 I am using a Midi DJ console.

I don't make videos, but like others on this list I use my HL2 almost daily (mostly digital). I have taken my HL2 out into the field, and made a few contacts at 5w, but 5w SSB is always a struggle unless conditions are really good. For SSB at home I use either my MX-P50M or an RM Italy HLA150 amp. I have a broken XP125B amp I need to fix, but before I broke it I used the HL2 and that amp at field day back in 2021 and made many contacts.

Since my purchase, I have used Ft8 QRPP daily with HL2. 

Now I have a COVID19.... I am stuck at home but I wanted to participate in Region 1 IARU VHF Contest so I hooked HL2 to Homemade HighPerf.XVRTr. (LO 116MHz@30dBm hihi...you have to once you have 5 local clubs running 4 x 10el and 1000W towards you 24/7) and only used driving power of about 15Watts. I have made 80+ QSOs in the contest, saw lots of splatter and undelievable wide signals, bad screen grid power supplies etc.but since two weeks or so I am using only HL2 as my rig.

After reading the replies on this thread, all I can say is "you are my people!".

I'm a newbie to digital modes.  

I am running quisk with wsjtx and cqrlog on linux.

I am running about 2W out and to a 20/40m EFHW antenna so no gain.

I am finding that I need to avoid 20m/40m FT8 during busy periods, the other signals in the passband are too loud for me to be heard.

I am finding the other signal needs to be coming in at -4 or so for the path to be good enough for them to hear me.

I am finding my tuner can tune my antenna for 15m and if the band is open people can hear me since the signals are spread out more.

I keep making a pass over 10m to hope something comes in, but pretty much nil.

I'm also finding it pays to make a pass over the FT8 signals, I can usually be heard there better than on the busy bands/modes.

I have a 2nd HL2 that is running SparkSDR and decoding 10m/15m/20m/40m 24 hours a day, acting as a skimmer to tell me when certain stations are on the air.

The amplifier i am using in my video is using only one 6P45C aka EL519 tube . This amlifier is my main amplifier since all my transceivers are about 4 to 10 wats only . This amplifier driven with 5 watts is providing about 80 up to 110W which is not bad at all. This amplifier is cathode driven with grounded grids with a plate voltage about 700v only and biasing about 12v with 25ma idling current. the Max power i can get is about 130 up to 140w with about 10w driven which is the maximum.

The other amplifier is almost the same and it is built with  2 6P45C  and as a driver i am using a 6146 tube . This amplifier is providing me about 250 up to 270w with only 2 watts input.

For both amplifiers the key to achieve a good power and mostly a great spectral purity is to use a N7DDC tiny ATU in the input circuit during transmit . This providing a great and perfect tuning at the input which is athe key to obtain a great linearity also.

I'm very happy with the Hermes-Lite 2, used it with JS8 and FT8 so far. I've switched from a SunSDR2 DX. I've been happy with the SunSDR performance and also the nice GUI running on Linux. But in the end it was too "closed" for my needs (e.g. proprietary tuner communication). After selling that I was using the grplabs QDX for some weeks. Very happy with that. But the Hermes Lite 2 gives me all HF Bands, and fine grained power level control. "Quisk" is very powerful and makes connection with JTDX and JS8call very easy as it automatically sets up the loopback devices. I've also attached a paddle via a Morserino 32  and a usb/rs232 adapter. The hermes lite gets some boost from a Hardrock 50 with integrated ATU (feeding into a GPM1500 vertical). The hardrock interface works a treat, so I get automatic band switching and ATU solution recall via frequency info passed to the Hardrock. I don't have a lot of experience with the Hermes lite yet (got it from the last manufacturing run), but couldn't be happier so far. CW Skimmer via hermes intf dll also worked fine.

Just made a few FT8 QSOs across all bands where my ant works reasonably ok'ish (see screenshot).

The HL2 is my only active rig here on HF, wanted or needed. Recently paired with DX World-e amplifier from SV2RIF ("500W" version, but it does this easily and with clean signal). It is the perfect match. 4W from HL2 gives nearly 6ooW out from the amp. I can't always use all of that as I'm in the UK with 400W ERP limit so need to throttle it back to keep legal.

My software of choice is Simon Brown's SDR Console. It's the software that has a superb GUI and replicates a hardware rig closer than any other software I've seen and has been honed by Simon to be an excellent companion to the HL2. Modes, sideband, CW (with low latency sidetone and fast semi-break in), FT8, WSPR, you name it, all handled with great ease.

Before I had the linear I used HL2 barefoot, mostly on FT8 and CW because SSB is hard work with 5W! I also use HL2 in "split" RX/TX mode using HL2 low power TX output and separate RX input (RF3) to drive several transverters on 2m and 6m (others still to come). Faultless.

I simply cannot give enough praise to the HL2. The RX in combo with SDRC is simply superb. The best receiver I've ever used, and I've used a few. The TX is extremely clean, as monitored both locally and from afar using Web SDRs. I always receive glowing TX audio reports.

Not sure why a YouTube video is needed? There must by now be several hundred HL2s in daily use around the world. People probably too busy working DX to spend the time and effort bothering with a video. Also I guess (very sadly) like most of us hams these days that perhaps we are of a "certain age" where we don't feel the need to document every move we make and every meal we eat by making a video record. I for one have far better uses for my time. There's simply nothing to prove with the HL2. It's simply the best value SDR rig out there by a country mile, and even with no regard to cost it's still one of the best. Just buy one (if you are lucky enough to be able to get hands on one) and use it. It's great!

Thanks Max for the update and condolences on Her Majesty's passing.

I think the value of seeing videos of the HL2 can't be overstated; There's lots of vids for other rigs like the IC-7300 and the like so why not the HL2? I believe if we see more of the rig showcased then more will end up on the air. If more get on the air, the support (commercial and user) wil grow so it's a win-win. I posted a seemingly obscure youtube video of an IC-706MIIG with a tuner I was selling (and it sold), and when I saw how many hits it got I just decided to leave it up since I might be providing some guys with useful information. I'd say, if you have the means to do it, capture some HL2 footage and spread the good word. I intend to do so when I get mine completed.

I use my HL2 mainly as portable with an Alexloop antenna, a LiFePo 3.5Ah-14V battery and a Logitech USB headset, all of them being stored in the Alexloop backsack.
I use it with a Windows 11 laptop but plan to build a smaller laptop with a Raspberry Pi4B-8GB, which I already own.
I have set Quisk with Wsjt-x or JS8Call or FreeDV or Fldigi but prefer to use SparkSDR. With SparkSDR I get an output of 6 Watt, less with Quisk. Additionnaly SparkSDR directly controls Wsjt-x and Fldigi without any intervention by the OM and it can send CW from the keyboard and decode CW...
The Alexloop efficiency varies from less tha 10% on 40M, around 50% on 17M-15M and even more on 10M.
From my balcony (4th floor of a steel-reinforced building, a true Faraday cage!) I have been read on 17M-FT8 on the East Coast of the USA, at about 7,500 Nautical Miles from New Caledonia, not so bad with only 3 Watt radiated!
Another good point for the HL2, its power amplifier mosfets are able to work without damage with SWR>65, which is very convenient in portable operation, when you tune your Alexloop, a very delicate and precise operation, you face very high SWR until being tuned below 2.0 and your PA will not be destroyed.

Yes Pierre. PA is bomb-proof. When I first got mine I was impatient to get on air and had no ATU so just stuck random wire in antenna socket. Worked CW all over the place with no issues. Still going strong! Amazing.

Yes, point taken Glen. Maybe I misinterpreted your original email, but it looked like your friend was querying whether HL2 users were some sort of myth, taking YouTube as the final arbiter, but I think the responses you received on here show it's simply not the case. YouTube is a fantastic resource for sure, and I use it every day, but I don't take everything I see on there as a true and final judgement on what goes on in the "real world"!

Regarding 7300. That has to be one of the most popular black-box rigs of all time so given the multiple thousands sold I guess it's not surprising that there are a lot of videos on YouTube. It would be very interesting if perhaps Steve (if he has not already done so somewhere on here) could tell us how many HL2s have now been sold on Makerfabs? I think each run may have been a couple hundred (ish) so total number out there maybe 1000+? Maybe I am way out and it's a lot more. Does anyone have that information, as it would be nice to know?

I am sure sooner or later someone with the means will post some TX action as a video though. But in the meantime, please be assured it works as a main station HF transceiver and works spectacularly well as attested to by all the responses to this post.

Not sure how a video is going to get more on the air considering components to build one are not available, and may never be again.

I use Quisk/WSJT-X/Gridtracker, and various amps around 50w. In around a year of sporadic operation, I did WAS and WAC on each one of the 9 HF bands with FT8 and FT4. A highlight of that would be QSOs on 2 bands with 8J1RL. 1190 grids/135 DXCCs so far. For most of this year I've only been using it with transverters. The lower 48 states on 6m FT8 went really well, done in about 3 weeks. AK and HI have been elusive though. 205 grids/19 DXCCs on 6m. Then there's 2m FT8, which unsurprisingly is very slow going/difficult, just getting out of the state of Texas is rare for me, longest distance QSO has been 339 miles.

I bought my HL2 in November of last year and played with it a little bit but set it off to the side to use down the road. Down the road is now. I thought about selling it because I just don't use it and had some expenses come along I need to cover but was really on the fence. I hooked it up again yesterday and am still impressed with what it can do. I'm now seriously considering selling my 7300 instead. I have a 7000 that I use for VHF/UHF and can use it on HF until I get an amp for the HL2.

Use my HL2 several times a week driving a transverter for operation on 222, mostly SSB but occasionally digital.  So happy with the performance that I have started collecting additional transverters for 50-1296 MHz, just need some round tuits to get the IF switching built.  Have also purchased a second HL2 from the batch available last month, that one will be used for HF driving a Hardrock 50.

I couldn't get Thetis HL2 to work CW when keying a serial COM, (worked fine with the Powers SDR that Reid had built), so have finally made up a lead to connect the external keyer with sidetone to the Hermes KEY/PTT socket. My Hermes Lite is still on the original 7.0p0 Rx4 gateware when supplied.

Working perfectly, well almost.

When changing to ssb on Thetis after a CW session, the mic has gone, no audio. Pull out the CW plug from the front of the Hermes Lite, and mic gain is back.

Have others found this behaviour?
