 This document should be added to each shim delivery by MAKERFABS

Easy shim mounting instruction

 

An easy fit for all, if the Shim is 5.00mm thick, and the enclosure 40mm is still the same size,

and the orientation of the shim is correct. Check picture!

Larger area on shim goes to enclosure bottom, small area of shim goes to board side.

Flat side goes to enclosure rail side. Check picture!

Screw size is M3, 3mm.

That way it is more then enough spacing around shim not to come in contact with any parts.

But make sure the hole is placed correct, same position as original for the rail cooling and

the M3 screw passes trough board, shim and bottom of enclosure, without any force applied!

So it’s designed and proven. But there where from the start wrong orienting instruction given, 

and they may still be floating around in net.

I added two new pictures, explaining how to slide the shim in place (This is my prototype, but same size)

Please check the pictures as that’s the only way !!!!!

That could be a sample for it, also maybe supplying  the M3 screw hardware.

Hi Folks

In case its so, that the shim thickness has changed or the enclosure is new or different.

There is a simple test to check: Place the shim, befor mounting in one corner of the enclosure

and check, if the shim is FLAT with the RAILSHOULDER, supporting the board, then its ok!

It must be equal and flat no steps allowed.

If it is different, dont mount or correct!

These instructions seem confusing.  

"flat with the rail shoulder" is ambiguous, given the shim has 7 flat sides.

"rail shoulder" is also ambiguous, as there is a case rail on the bottom below the slot actually supporting the PCB.

Perhaps the diagonal cut on the shim should be near the PCB, and diagonally opposite the bottom case rail.

On thing I learned from working with world class human interface design teams is that if I alone make a mistake, I might be confused.

But if multiple people make the same mistake, it is the documentation or equipment that is confusing and needs to be fixed.

This thread continues because someone else (not me) shorted out their HL2 PCB.  That adds up to more than 1 person.

Shim description and illustrated documentations where sent to forum and manufacturer (Makerfabs) twice. First time before the new set was built. Each time asked to be printed and added to each order sent out with shim – seems that was never the case. With the argumentation, there are links in Net; info can be picked up there. If any new buyer ever checked in net or just started to put all quick together, with the risk of wrong doing, I don’t know? Comes to it, in the meantime someone might have changed to a new enclosure type in the new set. The present designed and produced shim, only fits into the former 40mm type. Any new enclosure type would need a new shim size adaptation.

I received my Hermes Lite last week with the case. The shim was just a few thou or about  0.1 or 0.2 mm too thick. I skimmed it down evenly to be a snug fit to allow the board to slide in on the rails.

No issues on powering up, and rx working perfectly.

Will be getting tx going this weekend.

Iv seen discussions about metal shims and a tolerance issue ....

I used heat pad for CPU style thermal pads --- in part of the varying thickness -- 

I didnt report on my usage because I have not used my H2 much --- due to divorce ( God "D" hurts ) ... 

I wonder if anyone else looked into this approach -- it eliminated the need for precise measurement and allowed for compression when installing ( and for variance in thickness of cases )

This is exactly what I was looking at a while ago. Currently I need an external fan blowing over the 40mm enclosure to keep the temp down so I'm going to try the 55mm enclosure with internal fan. It appears that a 3.5mm thermal pad may be a good fit. Maybe I wouldn't even need it but it can't hurt.
