I saw this recent video of a Hermes Lite being run from an android phone with a fork of the SDR++ software. Is this transceive software available for download anywhere yet?

You can also directly connect to an HL2 for portable ops from an iOS device (such as an iPhone or iPad) using an ethernet adapter and my rtl_tcp SDR app.  Receive capability is currently in the release in Apple's App store.  Support for transmitting CW and FT8 is in beta test.  Email me for Testflight invitations (which is how to get a free copy). 73, Ron, n6ywu

Thanks for the links David, but they are for the main fork which is a receiver only - I was interested in the transceiver version in the Youtube video. I expect it will get into the public domain sometime this year. I had a fancy to make SSB contacts from the campervan, using just my phone as the backend.

Hello gentlemen,

I brought the fork to some usable state, please check it out here:  https://sdrpp-brown.san.systems/

Good luck!

This looks awesome. I'll be testing out Android and Windows ASAP. Thanks!

Hello Sannysanoff,

Thank you for your recent work on SDR++BROWN. I have it working with my HL2, and I am controlling it remotely on both my Android phone via 4G LTE, and my Windows PC with WiFi at my work. The remote server is working surprisingly well. I have RX working with no issues (even at 384000) and I will be testing the SSB TX feature shortly.

Keep up the great work. This is really great stuff! :)

For the benefit of anyone in the group who wants to control their HL2 remotely with a proper IP server/client, I can highly recommend this version (for RX at least!)

I know this is an older post but I was wondering if your TestFlight Beta is still ongoing? I’ve purchased the App Store version but would love to try a beta, especially if there is an option to TX. Thanks for any information!

Hi Dustin,
Yes, I still offer TestFlight beta versions of my SDR app with HL2 support.  The beta versions are usually ahead of the App Store versions in terms of bug fixes, features, and support for operating the HL2 directly from an iPhone or iPad (via an ethernet adapter) or Apple Silicon Mac.  Please install Apple's TestFlight app, note the terms and conditions, and email me directly from the email address that you want me to submit to Apple for your TestFlight invitation (you can find my email address on the hotpaw dot com website).  Currently, CW Tx works, SSB Tx sort-of works (using AirPods for the mic+speaker), but needs a lot more testing. And AM is next on the list.  I also have a partially finished HL2 FT8 decoder + manual Tx iOS/iPhone app available for beta testing.

I'm working on a new version of an iPhone app that allows operating FT8 via a direct connection to an HL2 (via an iPhone-to-ethernet adapter and/or cable).  Might be useful for lightweight portable ops.  It's not in Apple's App Store yet.  But if you have an iOS device that can run iOS 17 or later, and an adapter, email me for a TestFlight invitation.
I've also updated, fixed bugs, and made several improvements to the HL2 support in my rtl_tcp SDR iOS app in the App Store.  I have TestFlight invitations (pretty much a 90 day free trial) available for that app as well, as well as Promo codes for those providing me with test feedback.
Thanks and 73,

I don't have any apple devices, but is anyone working on a android equivalent of something like this?

HI!
I forgot that I saw the update supporting HL2 a while ago and hadn't tried it yet. I've had your app for a while, but haven't used it much lately as I rarely have an rtl_tcp server running when I really want to use it. This makes it much more useful, since my HL2 is usually running most of the day - even when I'm not using it!

It works quite well and was easy to set up on my pad and phone ( but of course, I've had the app for a few years and was already familiar with it).

I'll be glad to join your TestFlight if you'll have me. I've worked with it before. I'll DM my email address if you'd like...

Sorry - I accidentally directly answered Seb - here's the same email I sent him for the sake of the group...

Seb, the Hermes Lite is a network server. It’s an amateur radio transceiver built with a network interface to directly talk to clients running on anything that can talk to it over wired or wifi ethernet.

The application we’re taking about for IOS is a network client for SDR dongles and receivers that run a network server program for remote clients on the same network. The app already runs Hermes Lite 2 remotely (receive only) and has done so for a while. That works very well and is NOT in beta testing any more.

Ron’s looking for beta testers for a new version (or is it a new app?) that can transmit and receive FT8 with the Hermes Lite only. If you’re not familiar with operating FT8 and using the Hermes Lite and don’t have one, or not familiar with Ron’s existing App - called HotPaw rtl_tcp SDR, in the App store, you might want to start by getting familiar with all those things first before requesting to be a beta tester.

There’s a learning curve associated with the Hermes, and you’ll have to build one first - it’s not available fully assembled and make sure it’s working as well. That’s definitely the place to start. Client software for MacOS, Raspberry Pi and Windows are all available for free and work well.

I haven’t tried rtl_tcp SDR with a radioberry here, so I’m not sure if that works as well. In theory, it’s a perfect HL2 subset so Ron’s project is very exciting. I just hope he adds regular SSB and possibly CW to it as well!

hope this helps!

Hi All,

My rtl_tcp SDR app, which is available from Apple's iOS App Store, now also supports transmitting CW and SSB when your iPhone or iPad is directly connected to an HL2.  I have a separate iPhone app, HL2_FT8  for FT8, available for very early beta test.

Transmitting from an iOS device requires either: a direct wired connection via a suitable ethernet adapter, an extremely low latency WiFi connection, or the use of hl2_relay or HL2WifiBuffer (both on GitHub) as a buffering relay running on a server (Raspberry Pi, et.al.) colocated with your HL2.

Transmit from my app has only been very lightly tested, so I'm looking for beta tester who will send me bug reports.  For CW using a straight key, I added support for using KU7Q's CTR2-Midi key adapter with my rtl_tcp SDR app.  The SDR app requires iOS 15.8 or later.  The FT8 app requires iOS 17.6 or later.  To beta test my apps (free), please email me directly, as I need to give Apple a valid email address for you to get your TestFlight invitation.
