I think we should buy this boat https://www.boattrader.com/boat/2024-tracker-grizzly-1648-sc-9127654/

Look, I know what you're thinking. "We’re a hackerspace in the desert, not a nautical exploration guild." But that’s exactly why we need this boat. Let me explain.

First, consider the Tracker Grizzly 1648 SC not as a boat—but as an unclaimed platform. It’s an open-source chassis. A floating prototyping rig. A solar-powered sensor buoy. A distributed LoRa gateway on water. It's a testbed for marine robotics, floating mesh networks, and amphibious drone deployment. And, crucially, it's less expensive than most of our 3D printers after upgrades and repairs.

Now I know—we're in Mesa. Desert. Dry. But this is exactly why it's brilliant. We’ve already conquered land. We’ve built furniture, rockets, robots, and the occasional cursed animatronic. The next logical frontier? Water.

Picture this: Salt River Hackathons. Hack-the-Lake day trips. Solar distillation projects on the water. Have an idea that could improve water quality or monitor ecosystems? Now you have a boat.

Still not convinced? Let’s talk logistics:

  • Towing? Literally everyone in Arizona owns a truck.

  • Storage? It’s lighter than the CNC machine. Put it on the roof rack.

  • Maintenance? It’s aluminum. It’ll outlive us all.

  • Justification? We’ll use it once, post about it on Mastodon and Reddit, and instantly become the most viral hackerspace in North America.

And worst case scenario? We do what we always do—gut it, rewire it, and add LEDs until it’s unrecognizable. BoatLab. Floating cyberdeck. Art car for Tempe Town Lake.

And let us not forget: If you don’t show up to vote against it… the boat wins.

I'm in.

However, can we call it ColdFloat Labs?  I don't like Sync or Sink associated with boats.

I guess I will have to be a debbie downer on this case. I cannot support it, I still have PTSD over hackerspace boats from the prototypical hackerspace in Michigan that I volunteered at.

The short version of the story is they got a boat and shortly afterwards  got raided by the department of treasury for money laundering, fraud, and threats of physical harm.

FloatSync. Work through it, you'll see the light.

Certainly we're not at risk of Treasury agents raiding us, we've got insufficient funds to attract them. But, we will have to license it, offer or complete Coast Guard courses in seamanship, build up some sort of check in/check out process, acquire life jackets and other safety equipment. Probably need a meshtastic node for emergency communications, a VHF radio, you know, it's all important. If free storage isn't available, we've got that. And ancillary equipment. But heck ya, damn the torpedoes...

YES! This is the heatsync energy we've been missing.  I'd like to both thank and blame Arnob.

Hold on a second.  I'm in Michigan and need to know about this hackerspace.  Cpro what the heck happened?
