Very interesting article. And if it could be worked out, perhaps the SRM for peak shaving would have to be done for only decades instead of centuries--and a way out of the Termination Shock criticism

Wow Mike!  This sounds almost too good to be true!  The next question of course is how does it scale in terms of resources, energy and cost. But it sounds fantastic.
Best,
Ron

Hi Mike,

The best that can be done with CDR is to "slow global warming".  Everything points to the need to reverse global warming and bring down temperatures using Solar Geoengineering. This applies of course to tipping elements, however you define the tipping point.  Just slowing global warming, or to shave off the peak warming as you suggest, guarantees that most tipping processes will continue until their collapse point, condemning humanity to the consequences of collapse: e.g. AMOC collapse with its effect on climate around the planet, and Greenland ice sheet partial collapse with its devastating effect on sea level rise.  SG will have to continue until CDR has brought the CO2 level down below 360 ppm.  This requires removal at at least 60 GtCO2 per year for decades if SG is to be phased out this century.

Am I scaremongering?  I think not.

BTW, this wonderful CO2-absorbent material cannot be scaled up to remove CO2 at the gigaton level.  We need to put gigatons of carbon in soils and/or oceans: this can be done by enhancing life in the soils and oceans.

Cheers, John

Hi Ron--Indeed, though one qualifier to add that this is a University Press Office release and somehow they do always seem to be quite optimistic. But fascinating scientific explanation.

Best, Mike

Major kudos to the inventors! However, three key problems with DAC still remain: you still have to pump air through a mess of tiny pores that requires much energy and equipment materials; you still have to heat up the pores every time to 60C then cool them back down if you wish to continue extracting the atmospheric CO2; and you still have to find a use, or safe and low-cost disposal site, for the massive amount of CO2 product. Furthermore, it is not stated how many cycles the COF can stand before it becomes too contaminated or otherwise degraded. Photosynthesis still seems a better way.

Agreed, you read my mind and saved me the trouble of writing same.

Fascinating technology indeed. However non-scalable to global dimensions.
