Yes, this is real.    All you need is a few ESP32s scattered around the house.

Philips Hue has this feature built into their controller hub and uses the Zigbee radios already in every Hue light bulb that you already would own and made it work reliably as a commercial product.   So there is no reason to use ESP32, as the software could be built into any wireless device.

But using cameras or mmWave Radar or IR motion detection or even Bluetooth trackers is also easy to do and not expensive and is available off the shelf; no “hacking” is involved.    I mean, seriously, I just bought a couple of mmWave radar units for under $20 each, and they seem to be reliable.  These are finished units sold to end-user consumers, not just the PCB.  One was under $10 but very low-featured.     For more money, I can get one that tracks multiple people.   

For elder care, I’d like to go with BT trackers and make the person wear an ankle or wristband (or a fitness watch if they are mentally up to it).
