Good morning,
Thank you for your email and for taking the time to write to us.
The Canal & River Trust is dedicated to providing a clean, safe and enjoyable environment for all our waterway customers. However, we face a difficult struggle to reduce the severe amounts of litter, fly tipping and general anti-social behaviour in some areas. As a charity, we do not have the funds to dedicate volumes of staff entirely to removing high levels of waste. However, we take our responsibilities very seriously and endeavour to work with local partners and volunteers to help with both cleaning up the waterway and tackling the problem at source.
We have found that the presence of litter bins often encourages people to leave more waste as well as attract fly tipping of large items and bulk domestic waste. This means the bins overflow quicker than we can empty them, they look unsightly and could attract vermin. As such, we have been removing some of these bins and encourage towpath users to take their waste with them.
We have seen an increase in the use of our tow paths, and we continue to work to understand and respond to this increase in activity by our waterways. We have many projects that raise the awareness of the effects of litter on the community and natural environment. These include the Plastics Challenge and our Towpath Taskforce teams. Alongside these campaigns, we strongly advise users of the towpaths and canal network to take their rubbish home with them. Please see the links below for more information.

Our volunteers are a massive part helping keep the waterways clean and tidy from litter. We hope to expand our volunteering programme over the next few months. If you are interested in becoming a Canal and River Trust volunteer, please see the link below for more information.

I find the logic behind the CRT's decision rather wonky. But on a more positive note, the reference to the Trust's Towpath Taskforce teams prompts me to encourage neighbours to join the Oxford team of volunteers. We meet on the first Friday of every month, from 10 am to 2 pm (but there is no obligation to stay until the bitter end). We work along the canal towpath between Hythe Bridge and Frenchay Road bridge, clearing litter and graffiti, planting shrubs, painting the lock gates, etc. All tools and materials (and hot drinks) are provided by the CRT's team leader.
There are tasks for all ages and abilities. I enjoy working in the fresh air with this friendly group. If you would like to give it a try, please reply to this email.

If you have a dog you need to remember it eats..then poops. And if you have to take the poop home to dispose of so be it, that's the potential downside of having taken on a furry friend.
Big increase in dog population = a big increase in poop. Dog poo can be toxic.
Dog urine is also a problem given the increase in our furry friends...see articles about issues in national parks.(Dartmoor eg).
Thanks
