Dear all,

Thanks very much for all the emails offering support to our Ukrainain neighbours, it has been lovely to see. I am pleased to say that they have already met quite a few people on the street and have been supported with the car parking issue.

I have spoken to Olena today and she is keen to be part of this group and so I am writing this email (with her permission) to properly introduce her to everyone here. Olena is living at number 80 with her father and 2 children and has recently arrived from Ukraine. She is cc'd into this email so hopefully can be added to the google group (apologies I don't remember how) and is happy to be contacted if anyone wants to say hi!

Olena - welcome to Hayfield Road, and to Oxford, we are really happy to have you and your family here as a neighbour and part of the community!

Best wishes

Emma & Florian (88)

Dear Neighbours

Olena's father would love to do some fishing. I agreed with Olena that I would ask neighbours if  anyone in the street has a rod and line he could borrow.  Also, does anyone know about getting fishing licences in the area.  I believe to fish in the canal around here one needs a licence from the North Oxford Angling Society - but would love any expert advice.  I can help Olena's father get the licence.

Please let Olena (number 80) or me (number 59 ) know re the rod.

Thanks
Catherine

The North Oxford Angling Society has a website with contact details: https://allaboutangling.net/fishing-clubs/north-oxford-and-district-angling-society/

(Please, please ask Olena's father never to leave fish hooks or lines behind on the canal bank. On several occasions in the past the Friends of the Trap Grounds have had to summon swan rescue teams to come from Windsor to deal with swans that have swallowed hooks or become entangled in lines.)

IMHO it's a simple online process at
https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences/buy-a-fishing-licence
- and a license bought there would be valid everywhere in England and Wales,
except private fishing grounds areas - such areas are clearly marked
(but I am neither a lawyer nor an angler).

Good morning,

He will need a trout and coarse fishing rod licence for up to 2 rods which he can get from here:

In addition to a rod licence he MUST also have a permit to fish the canal which is controlled by North Oxford Angling Society. You can obtain this licence by waking into Top Tackle on Abingdon Road. This also allows you to fish parts of the River Thames, but not the part on Port Meadow. To fish that part a permit from Littlemore Angling Society is needed which can again be purchased from Top Tackle. I think there may be a reciprocal arrangement whereby permit holders of LAS can fish NOAS waters so he may only need one of these licences. Wayne at Top Tackle will be able to clarify.

There is also the Ace Tackle and Bait fishing shop in Kidlington which I think will also sell NOAS and LAS permits.

Also worth noting it is all catch and release. The nearest place to catch fish for the pot is Farmoor Reservoir fly fishing for rainbow trout.

If he just wants to fish the canal and Thames I have a pole rod and some basic tackle I can lend him. You can tell him Oxford has some of the best coarse fishing in England.

Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Robert

I have a rod he can have, I don’t want it back . It is not a pole rod, but maybe one of the children would like to help him fish. My grandsons used it when I lived by Hinksey Stream. I don’t think children need licences. It is just a rod and needs a reel and line. We will have fewer fish now that Hayfield Rd has otters
