Hey folks!
I hope you are finding time to enjoy the fall weather and holidays with family and friends.
It's that time of year again- Sacramento Wildlife Refuge! Anyone interested in a January visit? Though, now looks to be a great time too, from the photos on the FB page.

Let me know if anyone is interested in our annual day-migration.

I’m thinking that the next time Chris does Florida, he ought to invite his Saturday II friends to join him. I mean—good grief—I guest-lectured his class once for free!

Just saying: I’ll bet they have birds down there.

Hi everyone,

It looks like Ron and I will be joining you for breakfast at Putah Creek Cafe. It'll be great to see the gang again.

Originally we thought we couldn't make it, so last Thursday we went in the RV, arriving at noon-smart to plan to be there at 10, although we saw most of the usual species, we saw more snow geese in the fields before arriving. Unfortunately our schedule for the weekend precludes us from joining you for the tour.

Tim and I were looking forward to Saturday. But unfortunately he is battling a nasty virus of some kind, and isn't going anywhere for a while. And I need to stay close to home. Sorry to miss this. But I hope those who go have a great time!

Wishing Saturday II the very best on your January outing.

I participated in a swan count in Skagit county on Wednesday, riding along with a WDFW wildlife biologist who monitors swan mortality for a living. I pointed out a prairie falcon, which I only see about once a year this far north, and he was’t at all impressed. I guess there’s no money in counting falcons around here. Missing my GGRO raptor buddies all the more.  (And, by the way, we saw an American goshawk a couple weeks ago while doing the Padilla Bay CBC. We were glued to our scopes watching it when I heard a muffled Yikes! from my dear wife. A goat had come up to her without her knowing it, and gave her a gentle head butt.) Always an adventure birding in farm country.

Wish we could join you folks tomorrow.  Fine memories of all those Sacramento birds.

Here in the Delta we’ve been experiencing morning fog which doesn’t lift enough for driving until 8. As we are an hour away from Winters, we’re going to have to pass.

Soo…how was the refuge?! Any highlights? Sad to have missed it.

Lots of bald eagles around here in Gig Harbor, WA. John, we still need to get together ! How great would a Sat II field trip to Washington be? 😇

Hope everyone is doing well!

Hi Emily -

The refuge was good!  January is a good time to be there. Seemed like anywhere we looked we saw a bald eagle.

And there were a few ducks, too. ;-)

We were a little short on falcons. Like, 1 kestrel was it (if I'm recalling correctly).

Some pics...

Cheers,

-Brian

I’ll add to Brian’s thoughts,
It was a beautiful day, high on sarcasm and trouble-seeking in the only way Sat II knows how.
Bald eagles of various ages. Sub-adults stirring up trouble on their attempts to grab a goose here and there. A few relaxing adults.
We saw the great horned owl pair- and freaking heroic shout-out to Brian’s eyes!
You’ll see a photo of a clearly identifiable owl- nope, that’s not the one he saw, but what I saw- such an amateur! He saw the owl in amongst the tree trunk and mess of branches!!! Oh the heck??!! I’m still baffled! He saw a lump against the trunk? Okay, Brian!
But apparently e-bird has been silent on spotting these two for some time. It’s okay now, we came along and sorted it out for them.
Right, few falcons, lots of kestrels around and on the wires along the roads. Also saw a sharpy, great spot by Linda, and a coops- not entirely common in the area.

Spotted 8 species, then added a swainsons on the way home (not that we were keeping or checking off a list!)
Beautiful weather for it too.

Dec or Jan is a must!
A great reunion 😊

Second on Brian’s sharp eyes!  It was a fun day, beautiful weather, lots of ducks and geese and many eruptions of said as eagles either purposely or nonchalantly fly over head.  It was fun seeing folks after quite a long time.  I’ve very missed the sarcasm 🤣
