Hello,
This is Zachary Liebl (I showed up for 2 meetings so far).
I would like to give a presentation at the next Hartford LUG meetup. According to the website, it will be in November. Although, if we wanted to, I could give it this month.
Anyway this presentation would be on NixOS and Nix. NixOS, is of course the "hot new GNU/Linux distro," but many don't know that it is only one part of a larger Nix ecosystem. In my presentation, I would cover the entire Nix ecosytem including NixOS.
I would cover the following in my talk:
- Nix, the configuration language which is halfway between JSON and Haskell
- Nixpkgs, one of if not the largest repositories of software in the world
- Nix, the package manager which allows installing software on GNU/Linux, MacOS, and the BSDs
- Nix-shell, the ephemeral shell environment which allows users to spin up docker-like development environments with a fraction of the overhead
- NixOS, the operating system which uses the Nix ecosystem to achieve perfect reproducibility where the entire system configuration is stored in one file.
Is this something that you all are interested to hear? I could also split it into 2 talks, one for the Nix ecosystem and one for just NixOS; there is more than enough content for 2 talks.
From,
Zachary Liebl
