Election day is tomorrow. Here's one more thing to think about before you vote.

First, what has it meant in the past for America to be great?

  • It meant we joined the allies in WW1, even though we were far removed from the conflict (it wasn't our fight), yet we made the sacrifice and helped save the day anyway.
  • It meant we joined the allies in WW2 - although late, after Japan attacked us - yet we helped turn it all around for freedom in Europe at great cost in American lives and treasure, even after fighting on two major fronts.
  • It meant we transformed Japan from a collapsed and devastated dictatorship into the most thriving democratic and economic power in all of Asia - even far greater than the populist giant China (until very recently).
  • It meant we saved West Germany from the Soviets (via the Marshall Plan) thereby paving the way for their now united comeback as the greatest economic power of Europe.
  • It meant we saved South Korea from the fate of the brutally repressed dictatorship of North Korea to become the other thriving democratic and economic power of Asia - second only to Japan.
  • It meant we are the only country on earth to have landed a man on the moon (even now - 50 years later) - after stating publicly that we would - almost a decade before doing so.
  • It meant we won the Cold War while leading most of the world into the light while the Soviet Union (a source of darkness throughout the world) collapsed of its own dead weight.
  • It meant we designed and created the internet - then gave it away for the free benefit of all of humanity.
  • It meant we were and still are the oldest surviving democratic civilization on earth.

In other words, it meant we didn't just talk about doing great things, we actually did them.

Second, I believe COVID-19 death counts reported by disinterested sources like Wikipedia are accurately recorded for various countries all over the world. Why wouldn't they be? If anything, those numbers are probably low since it's very likely that many more deaths in the US and elsewhere were actually due to the pandemic - yet were misclassified as something else (see https://tinyurl.com/uldogpt , https://tinyurl.com/tgjzoqq , https://tinyurl.com/vq3hrly , https://tinyurl.com/ybghv6mm , https://tinyurl.com/yb287y8r , https://tinyurl.com/yy2ohg39 ). You can get a good feel for this by comparing death counts in 2020 to previous years and see there are far more deaths this year (for any reason).

I've personally been tracking daily US COVID-19 death counts (weekly most recently) since 4/12/2020 (see attachment).

On January 20, 2020 the first COVID-19 case was reported in the US. On the very same day the first COVID-19 case was reported in South Korea.

Early in the pandemic, Europe was hammered by COVID-19. At first, Britain, France, Germany, Italy & Spain all had many more COVID-19 deaths than the US. Yet as time went by all of these countries - except Spain - proved to be better - some significantly better - than the US at controlling the pandemic.

Why didn't America clearly and obviously demonstrate greater competence controlling the pandemic than Britain, France, Germany and Italy?

Why hasn't America clearly and obviously demonstrated greater competence controlling the pandemic than Canada?

All countries faring worse than the US, with the exception of Belgium and Spain are 2nd or 3rd world countries like Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Mexico - with Mexico being only slightly worse than the US ( see https://tinyurl.com/yy3ogogk ).

Why hasn't America clearly and obviously demonstrated greater competence controlling the pandemic than 2nd or 3rd world countries like the Czech Republic, Guatemala or South Africa

( again see https://tinyurl.com/yy3ogogk )?

As stated previously, South Korea had its first COVID-19 case on the same day as the US, yet as of today South Korea has had only 468 COVID-19 deaths. If South Korea had exactly the same population as the US, their COVID-19 death count would be 3,006. That's 3,006 SK dead compared to 234,567 US dead.

In other words, adjusting for population size, the US has 78 times as many COVID-19 deaths as South Korea! Why?

There is simply no way to explain this away - other than to say we have failed miserably - unlike almost any other major country on earth.

Now let's think like we are fighting the pandemic as a "war" since others have talked about it that way recently. If so, it's a war we are losing in a big way. Compare this "war" to wars we have fought in the past - and won (mostly).

More Americans have died from this pandemic than Americans who died in WW1 (116,516).

It is very likely that more Americans will die from this pandemic than Americans who died in WW2 (405,399).

In fact, COVID-19 deaths in the US have now far surpassed the accumulation of American war deaths throughout our entire history (not including the top 3):

Total: 1,354,664 (US War Dead - All Time)

 Civil: -655,000
   WW1: -116,516
   WW2: -405,399
        ========
         177,749

 COVID:  234,567

So wake up America and ask yourselves: What does it mean to be great again? Great at what?

Perhaps we are great at pretending we are better than everyone else. Better at what?

Is this really the best we can be?

So I guess the logic is that we don't like the way the covid thing has been handled so we're going to vote to implement leftist policies that are completely contrary to our heritage as Americans. You know, you democrats are real good at finding fault with ...well...everything, but you don't have any solutions of your own. What really would Biden or Harris or any of the other democrats have done differently other than maintaining a shut down that wouldn't have been effective anyway.  All you have to do is look at California and New York that have been locked down for ten months and they have higher numbers that Fl. and Tx. and our states have relatively open? They Criticized Trump as a fear monger and racist (which is the standard card they play) when he banned travel from China and Europe, but then, months later, they criticized him for not acting sooner.  So which is it?   Do you really think they're telling us the truth about this in terms of numbers?  Do you really think there is no political component to this?  Why are you blaming President Trump? Are you blaming Trump for all the deaths in the world? The virus originated in China who allowed travel outside of the country, but not within the country.  The virus originated in China.  It was released in China, The Chinese invented it.  I haven't heard a Democrat yet condemn China.  I also haven't heard any Democrat, elected or not, condemn the violence in our streets. The only one I can think of is Don Lemon and he said that only because he noted that it was helping Trump. What do the democrats offer? Here's something:  NY's governor took covid positive patients and put them in nursing homes and then they were surprised that all these people died.  What a bunch of idiots.  What do you like about Biden?  Why should we vote for that kind of corruption?  The government and the press spend three years investigating a Russia hoax based on fraudulent documents, yet nobody is investigating Biden corruption that is based on real and palpable evidence.  As far as being greater than other countries, don't forget that we had hospital ships in Los Angeles and in New York. He mobilized all of the available ventilators and had more mde so that nobody went without one. Also, we have a vaccine that's right around the corner and they're in the final phases of testing. None of that happened outside this country.  So whatever Trump did, he did right.

428 is a whole lotta oh-so-logical and elegantly formatted not to mention easy-to-read words there Ernie (FYI, please note the word "trump" appears only in your response - can't imagine why). Ok, enough of the snark. So let's try to keep it plain and simple this time Ernie.

Perhaps you can explain, in just a few more words - very few, why South Korea's handling of the pandemic has succeeded so spectacularly while the US has failed so spectacularly?

I disagree with your premise.  I don't think South Korea's numbers are lower than ours and I don't agree that the US has failed miserably. First off, we do more testing in this country than in any other country.  The more testing the higher the overall numbers and no one really knows the actual number unless everyone is tested. Second, they are outright lying to us about the numbers. They are keeping theirs artificially low and we are keeping ours artificially high (for the third reason). Third, and most importantly, this is an election year.  The entire focus of the democrat party is to unseat this president. Anytime somebody dies and the covid is either present or suspected, it goes down as a coovid death.  So  the guy who gets hit by a train and the coroner tests for covid and it's positive, well that's a covid death. Only an idiot would fail to see the political component of covid  in the U.S. The democrats want that number to be as high as possible. No success will be reported because they do not want the president to look good under any circumstances.  Interestingly, just today, election day, Birx and Fauci came out with doom and gloom forcasts for the U.S. They may work for the executive branch, but they are certainly no friends of President Trump. This is not to say that we haven't had our failures.  Take Governor Cuomo of New York.  His policy was to take covid positive patients out of the hospital and to require under penalty of law their placement in nursing homes which is the last place you would want covid positive patients to be.  Take Joe Biden. Campaigning from his basement with a mask on all the time. He's campaigning almost entirely on covid because that's all he has. What does he offer?  Why do you like Joe Biden so much? The answer is most likely that you don't like anything about him.  You're just voting for him because he's not Donald Trump. Voting for Biden because you don't like Trump is like saying that you would eat a dog turd because you don't broccoli.

Apparently the phrase "just a few more words - very few" has a different meaning on your planet Ernie. The familiar refrain "Fake News", short and sweet, would have sufficed, don't you think? Anyway, if you insist...

"First off, we do more testing in this country than in any other country.  The more testing the higher the overall numbers and no one really knows the actual number unless everyone is tested."

What's your source Ernie, Trump? LOL. That's just more BS propaganda straight from the horse's ass. Do you ever have credible sources to support your extravagant claims Ernie?

Here's a credible source, give a try:

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-testing ("The scale of testing compared to the scale of the outbreak")

Assuming you can read a scatter chart, you will see the US is indeed near the top of the "countries that test" list, but by no means do we "do more testing in this country than in any other country" (or alternatively, look at the source table, sort by "Daily tests per million"). These countries do more proportionately more testing than the US:

All COVID-19 tests:

    United Arab Emirates
    Denmark
    Bahrain
    Belgium
    Singapore
    France
    United Kingdom
    Lithuania
    Cyprus

COVID-19 PCR Tests (ie. the most accurate test):

    Russia
    Hong Kong
    Israel
    Czech Republic
    Spain
    Switzerland
    Slovakia
    Italy

So trying to cloud the issue with "we test more, that's why we have more cases" is just a total BS smoke screen. Normal people know this. They also know it's not about cases, it's about cases per million. And in hopes of avoiding wasted time on just such smoke and mirrors is why my article was about dead bodies, not test cases. You can't fake dead bodies.

But wait! You can fake dead bodies if your doctors and other health care workers and morgues everywhere are all conspiring to defeat the president! But of course!

That's why I wrote:

for this by comparing death counts in 2020 to previous
years and see there are far more deaths this year (for
    any reason).

Did you read even one of the many independent sources indicating COVID-19 death numbers are not too high but rather likely way too low Ernie?

So when Claudio Cancelli, the Mayor of Nembro (Italy), wrote way back in March 2020 (during the initial massive outbreak in Italy) "the real death toll for Covid-19 is at least 4 times the official numbers", he was just working closely with his American co-conspirator socialist propagandists to undermine poor President Trump - oh so many months before anyone knew how badly Trump would mismanage the pandemic in the US. I get it. Gee Ernie, that really does make a whole lotta sense. You really have me convinced.

Ernie also wrote:

Anytime somebody dies and the covid is either present
or suspected, it goes down as a coovid death.

That's just total crap Ernie and I think you know it (you're not that dumb, just desperate to help re-elect your loser).

But forget the COVID-19 numbers. Let's simply look at death counts in general - dead for any reason.

In 2020 there have been 299,028 excess deaths in the US as of 10/3/2020 - for any cause of death ( see https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6942e2.htm ):

    From January 26, 2020, through October 3, 2020, an
estimated 299,028 more persons than expected have died
in the United States.** Excess deaths reached their
highest points to date during the weeks ending April 11
    (40.4% excess) and August 8, 2020 (23.5% excess)
    (Figure 1).

So apparently all these extra dead Americans died in BLM riots, right Ernie?

In 2020, South Korea has had 176,364 deaths as of July (see http://kostat.go.kr/portal/eng/pressReleases/8/9/index.board ):

Jan 2020    28,471
Feb 2020    25,419
Mar 2020    25,879
Apr 2020    24,628
May 2020    24,353
Jun 2020    23,651
Jul 2020    23,963
           =======
           176,364

Extrapolating the above 7 months of death counts to a full 12 month year gives us 302,338 projected deaths in South Korea for 2020. That number is pretty close to the 298,820 count from 2018. But based on the population size of South Korea, if they had similar "excess deaths" like we have here in the US, South Korea would have 46,549 more dead rather than the 3,518 projected dead (again, due to any causes).

Ernie wrote:

Second, they [South Koreans] are outright lying to us

    low ...

So what you are saying is that South Korea actually has more than 40,000 dead bodies they're hiding, right? (perhaps in the DMZ where, if found, they can be dismissed as sadly inept North Korean defectors) That's one serious secret mass grave there Ernie!

Yep, that's totally believable, you know like "Voting for Biden because you don't like Trump is like saying that you would eat a dog turd because you don't broccoli."
