I have a patient I saw today who works at the local VA, in Johnson City, TN.  I think she has a clerical job, perhaps in admitting in the ER.  She knows that we use a modified CPRS in our office, and today said that she was unhappy that the VA where she works was going to be changing to a "web based version of CPRS."  I asked if she meant they were going to Cerner, but she said "no, CPRS".  "It looks just like CPRS, but runs in a web browser -- it will be good for people working at home."

Any idea what she might be talking about?

It is something that is being worked toward, but I don't think it will be
happening anytime soon.

She might be talking about using a screen sharing browser app which replicates the
MS Windows CPRS.exe  application using a technology like ZOOM or Remote Desktop
or VNC or something like that.

I know some non-VA hospitals also use such a tool to effectively cut down on network delays
by just sending the visual bits that have changed instead of running a thick/heavy client on the
MS Windows workstation.

It has been reported that such a solution works well with CPRS.
I don't know how extensive such an approach has been tested or implemented inside the VA.

There are other purported efforts to port the Delphi code to a browser, but I have not talked to
anyone who has been involved in such an effort since EHMP days.   It would be a very difficult
task for reasons that you, Kevin, have already mentioned.

Using web widgets to replicate the Graphic User Interface (GUI) of CPRS will probably be difficult
as well, as the Delphi developers tuned some of them to the needs of clinicians and other providers.

As you know WorldVistA is an open source organization, which this does not
appear to be. If I am wrong, please correct me.

I believe that persons working remotely at the VA can access CPRS through a windows hosted on VA servers.

This looks very interesting.  Does anyone know more than what the web page provides?  Looks amazing.  But is it being used?

to Hardhats,
Rafael Richards worked on the project so would have more detail I'm sure.

It is definitely not WebVRAM.

The term Web based CPRS has numerous and distinct efforts underway. The term spoken by the patient is referring to using CPRS with AWS AppStream; similar to Apache Guacamole. The other efforts will probably be discussed at the next VCM.

I have to voice some frustration here.  Over the years, a few of us have presented web-based frameworks integrated with VistA and implementing some some of its core features (authentication, RPC support, patient selection, etc).  While these fell far short of a complete implementation of CPRS, they provided a robust starting point for developing a web-based version.  Sadly, none of these ever garnered significant, if any, traction within the WorldVistA community.  I see this as an opportunity lost.

Doug, anything we adopt and implement we need to be able to support with our
volunteers. That limits us significantly.

Doug, not all who wander are lost—some just prefer to travel quietly.
