Hello HamSCI - We will have an informal ‘net’ this afternoon at 2100 UTC  (4PM Eastern US).

Looking ahead…

- No meeting on March 12th, as many will be preparing for the HamSCI Workshop a few days later.

- Our next formal presentation will be on April 9th, when we’ll be hearing from a radio astronomer about the search for subatomic particles.

Gary: I have bad news and good news to share with the group (told you already).

Bad News: I have to drop off the enjoyable 4pm Zoom sessions for the Spring - I am somehow now a tennis coach for a boys tennis team in Philly.  We practice 3-6.

GOOD NEWS: Professor Smith approved out Personal Space Weather Station project and Penn is very excited to participate.

Best,
John Campbell

Hello,

What will we be talking on zoom ?
I am looking to learn for cube sat ?
Or analysis data from cube sat on weather or gamma rays or radiation .

Can we discuss our topic of interest also?

Hi John,
Sorry that you have to drop off our HAMSCIENCE zoom meetings. I’ll miss your voice. Good luck with the PSWS and the tennis team.

KC2NMC: no worries. Professor Smith approved the budget and I was speaking with him from the tennis courts yesterday. I can coach and field Dr. Smith's phone calls.

Plus - our schools are so small neither team can field a team and the kids - most don't have tennis racquets.

Through it all we just took down Central High in Philly - Big School we have NOT beaten Central in 20 years.

—> Our school is 20 years old so we have never beaten them and most people don't know we even play them since they are a perennial powerhouse.

My Number one just took down their #1 and he beat him 6-0, 6-0. Central did not win one game and I got to ride the school bus back with the team.

I have not ridden a school bus since I was 15 - they come with stereos and seatbelts now. The school bus has a nice sound system. New to me.

Today's game I am gonna tell my number one go easy - we are playing the Art School kids today. Tend not to be great.

thanks for the thoughts,

 Coach W3MHZ / W3KZ

It’s already in this thread!  I can see it in the thread.  In a message from Gary:

Hello Mansi, it was good to talk with you on the HamSCIence Zoom yesterday.  You mentioned that your daughter and her friends are interested in cubesats, specifically, data analysis of cubesat gathered data.  Perhaps some of the 1500 or so members of this like may have ideas to contribute.

While HamSCI does not have any cubist projects underway at this time, I would like to suggest a websites they may find of interest:

https://science.nasa.gov/citizen-science/   This is NASA landing page for the citizen science projects sponsored by NASA.  A lot of very good science has been done by these teams.

https://hamsci.org/basic-project/swarm-e   A few years back, HamSCI was involved in SWARM-e, a satellite based radio receiver

https://hamsci.org/psws-overview  We also talked about the HamSCI Personal Space Weather Station (PSWS).  This would be a good project for individuals or groups with some radio experience:  Assembling components, installing simple antennas, Linux configuration, and so on.  Maybe a bit challenging for someone new to all of this, but they could look at the site and judge for themselves.

I hope we see you again on a HamSCI Zoom session, and/or the students can join us also.

73 (best wishes).

Hello Gary,

We’re grateful for your assistance so far. At this stage, we believe it would be beneficial to have a mentor for CubeSat or Personal Space Weather Station projects.

If anyone is interested in talking or discussing with my daughter would be great.

Thanks,

Mansi

Hello ,

My daughter came up with the below research idea . Please give suggestions.

Ionospheric Radio Changes During Solar Eclipse Using a Personal Space Weather Station

This project studies how solar eclipses and space weather events affect the ionosphere and, in turn, high-frequency (HF) radio communication. The ionosphere is a layer of Earth’s atmosphere that reflects radio waves, making long-distance communication possible, but it changes depending on solar radiation. During a solar eclipse, sunlight is temporarily reduced, creating a natural opportunity to observe how the ionosphere responds in real time. In this project, I will build and operate a Personal Space Weather Station (PSWS), based on work from HamSCI (Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation), to collect continuous radio data such as signal strength and noise levels. I will compare how these signals change before, during, and after the eclipse and relate those changes to solar and geomagnetic conditions. In addition to physics-based analysis, I will explore whether simple machine learning methods can help identify patterns or short-term changes in signal behavior. The goal is to evaluate whether a low-cost, ground-based system can provide meaningful local insight into ionospheric changes that are not always captured by large-scale monitoring systems.

Project Goals

• Understand how solar eclipse conditions affect the ionosphere
• Measure how HF radio signals change during these conditions
• Compare locally collected data with solar and geomagnetic activity
• Evaluate how well PSWS data aligns with larger monitoring systems
• Explore whether data patterns can help identify or predict signal changes

Methodology

• Build and operate a Personal Space Weather Station (PSWS)
• Collect continuous data on signal strength, noise levels, and frequency-dependent behavior
• Record data during normal day/night conditions and solar eclipse phases (or use archival data)
• Compare observations with solar activity (sunspots, flares) and geomagnetic indices (Kp index)
• Benchmark results against ionosondes, SuperDARN radar networks, and NOAA space weather models
• Analyze data using graphs such as signal strength vs time and frequency
• Apply simple machine learning methods to classify or detect patterns

Expected Outcomes and Contribution

• Identify measurable changes in HF radio signals during eclipse conditions
• Observe how different frequency bands respond to ionospheric changes
• Compare local PSWS measurements with large-scale models
• Demonstrate that a low-cost Personal Space Weather Station can provide useful real-time data
• Show how combining physics-based analysis with basic data modeling improves understanding of space weather effects

Thanks,
Mansi
