Please consider signing this petition to save the famous Horn Antenna. Not many people know the Big Bang was discovered here in New Jersey by the Cosmic Microwave Background. The property is slated for development.

My goodness, Mary Lou!
I was totally unaware of this looming disaster.
I wonder how many former Bell Labs people know?
I will contact several.
I wonder if the AAS Historical Astronomy Division is aware?
I believe Bob Wilson still lives in Holmdel.

Don't forget it was also used for the first transatlantic TV transmission via Bell's aluminized mylar 'baloon' satellite which I clearly remember watching the launch (from Wallops Island) in my backyard in Clark, New Jersey ... watched it as it inflated to its full size.  I believe the first transmission was to at BBC dish antenna at Goonhilly Downs.

Thanks for the alert !

I just signed the petition, and have forwarded it to another ham group with enough science-intrigued members to probably get some additional support.

Wow, hard to imagine a more major contribution to cosmology than
Penzias and Wilson's antenna.

I also remember watching the first transatlantic TV broadcasts
using this antenna.

Hi all,

I did the same.  Jules: was that balloon Echo 1, 1A, or 2?  I read about it somewhere.

Curious.  It is said that Telstar 1 made the first transatlantic television transmission:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstar, but it was launched from Canaveral.  Goonhilly Downs was the UK ground station.

There is a list of balloon satellites:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balloon_satellite

Perhaps you saw Explorer 9 or 19, which were balloons launched from Wallops: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explorer_9, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explorer_19

All interesting communications history.

I believe that the Andover, Maine 'big horn' was used with Telstar. I visited that site as a much younger person.

The horn antenna was a required pilgrimage for new employees. I worked at Holmdel for a summer back in the day, but I spent most of my 17 years at Whippany working on cellular stuff.
In its heyday, 7k people worked at Holmdel.

Any who, I signed and shared the petition.

From back when big companies supported basic research because "you never know".

I'll be in NJ this weekend and could possibly make a detour to swing by and see the horn. The google maps card for the location says it's closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Can anyone confirm this, or would I still be able to drive to there?
