Good day all,

I just recently found this interesting project and have been searching for and reading what I can on the subject.

After some searching I have failed to answer my question as to whether there is software for Windows?  or LInux - other than on a Raspberry PI

I don't have a spare Raspberry PI handy and would rather not buy another at this time but I do have a couple of spare Windows machines sitting around doing nothing.

cheers, Graham ve3gtc

Hi Graham,

There is not, but since fldigi (backbone of current version) and GNU Radio (backbone of future version) both work on Windows it would probably be quite feasible to make the software available with an appropriate set of instructions for automatic upload. I agree that this would make the system more widely usable, especially with the spike in price of Raspberry Pis.

It would be a good project if anyone is game to take it on.

Graham- there is no plan to port the software to Windows. However, if you have a spare PC that you are not using, you could install Ubuntu on it (replacing Windows) and that might work.

Good suggestion and I will spend some time exploring that option.

Thank you Kristina ( and others ).

I have used FLDIGI for many years both on Windows and LINUX. What changes were made in FLDIGI? Just some capability for automatic upload or do the changes go deeper than that. It would be easy enough to create  a python script to do the automatic uploading but deeper changes would be much more work.

Years ago I used to do something similar with monitoring CHU on 7 MHz ( I am near Ottawa ) and alternatively WWV on 10MHz using a Yaesu radio and Spectrum lab (sample plot attached)

I understand about the desire to use common inexpensive hardware in order to make the project more accessible

I will continue to follow along and contribute if able.

cheers, Graham ve3gtc ( near Ottawa Canada )

Graham,

The changes I made to FLDigi are much deeper and rather extensive - what's saved, how it's saved, output format,  file format, file naming, addition of each day's new file creation, metadata usage just to name a few things.

And the changes are fixed to ver 4.1.13 as the following changes he made preclude applying the changes I made.

And running Windows for this kind of long term data collection if really not an option - it's simply not a reliable enough OS to run that long (>year) without crashing...
My RasPi's have been running continuously for over a year with no problems.
Please don't get me started on what a piece of $#%@&* the Windows OS is......  Hmmmm.... Can you tell I don't like (more like HATE with a passion) Win**?
But I digress....    rant mode off....

I feel some context is warranted for John's antipathy toward Windows: https://youtu.be/XNhpn58Tt44?t=1196

I've been running Intel NUCs with Ubuntu for running various things for fldigi including recording from a GRAPE 1 receiver without any issues, although I haven't set up a dedicated Raspberry Pi for fldigi.
My general recognition aligns well with John's: Windows machines are simply too unstable for a server, and the licensing fee is unjustifiable unless you depend on a Microsoft Suite (such as Microsoft 365/Office).
I do own a Windows machine for Windows-specific software tools, but if I can do the same things on Linux, I'd rather do them on Linux (including Raspberry Pi OS, a variant of Debian Linux).
(I was a long-time FreeBSD user, though I ditched the OS completely in 2019, mainly because you had to compile everything to follow up the latest software development of the Ports collection.)

Thank you all.

I hadn't seen those videos so I had a look.

As to Windoze VS Linux - my experiences with Windoze have not been that bad. Long ago I figured out to optimize and trim the bloat and managed to make Windoze a bit more usable; particularly Win7 and Win10. Still didn't make Windoze my first choice but I had some applications that only ran on Windows and were not happy running under WINE on a Linux box.

I will manage to sort something out, I was hoping that it would be an easy path to follow but it is becoming one with many twists and turns.

I have or at least had a good quality GPSDO disciplined receiver ( Icom R75 with simple mod for GPSDO operation ). I dusted it off and turned it on today but something is amiss. It may be a victim of a recent thunderstorm or perhaps some internal component failure but in any case it is for the time being not working as it should - just another twist on the path.

I will continue to follow along.  Are there any other groups or mailing lists or web sites that I could be looking at?  I don't belong to the ARRL or Radio Amateurs of Canada ( RAC ) and as such I don't get their publications.

cheers, Graham ve3gtc

Hi Graham,

Please join us for some of our regular telecons. You can find the HamSCI calendar here: https://hamsci.org/get-involved

The Thursday morning one is Grape-specific; alternate Thursday afternoon ones are focused on planning for the 2023 and 2024 eclipse campaigns. There will be one of those this afternoon.
