Hi all,
Some of you probably remember that the Society bought Barb Darby’s hive this spring before she moved out west. I have been keeping it at my place and it is doing great. It was strong when we bought it, and I suggested that in addition to maintaining the main colony, it could be split at least once and possibly twice.
I completed the splits a couple of weeks ago. One split is ready now with one frame of new brood and several frames of nectar/honey and pollen. It is much stronger than a normal nuc and could probably take a second box soon. The other split does have a queen that was laying in the mating nuc but I just transferred it onto deep frames less than a week ago and I have not yet seen its complete brood pattern. I am hoping however that the second split will be ready next week.
So how do we decide who takes the first split? Who takes the second spit if it is strong enough? Both Lorraine and Yvon expressed interest in the past, but this should be a decision for the Society Core to make. Any one else?
One final point is that the splits are in deep boxes that the society owns. One split has a society outer cover but the other is missing an outer cover and both are missing bottom boards. Who has the society woodenware? We should have extra boxes, bottom boards, inner covers, etc. Also, I got an extra top feeder from Barb that I will not be wanting to keep. This will go with one of the splits.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.....
Roger

Barb,
I thought that you wound be happy. It is a great colony. The reason for my late splits is that my first priority was to first make a new queen to supersede the one that you had. I am not sure how old she is, but I wanted to be safe. I am now running the main hive as a two queen colony and will decide the fate of the extra queen in the end of the summer.
So are you fully settled in Alberta?
R.
Lorraine,
Okay. Thanks for letting me know. I knew that your new property was not ideal, but you were also raving about a spot that you could use by the frog pond. Anyway, that is fine.
Yvon,
Do you want the hive? Do you still have some of the society woodenware?
R.

Good to hear from you, Nicole.
BTW, with Lorraine hosting the Halifax extractor, this does raise the question of the status of the Dartmouth extractor. Who is hosting that one, now that Barb is gone?
