Hi core,

Does anyone want to connect with Duncan? Perhaps we need to regroup and see who is involved in the society and what we’d like to plan going forward.

Subject: Opportunity with the NSBA

Hi there,

I am the VP for the Nova Scotia Beekeeper’s Association, as you may know,  is the only provincial association recognized to work with the provincial government, department of agriculture and other bodies of government and industry shareholders.  As the Honeybee industry continues to grow, there have been challenges in other jurisdictions where a consolidation of our interests might be useful.  We would like to discuss your organization and find a way to provide a voice to your group within the NSBA, whether that be throught representation at the DOA/NSBA AGM & Symposium, or access to publish within our newsletter, or as a seat on the Provincial Board representing beekeepers in the urban area, but regardless of how it looks in the end, being part has benefits.  I am reaching out to see how we can help you and to whom we need to connect with.

Thanks very much,

Duncan Wetzel

VP NSBA

I agree with Jillian.  With the new year and loss of some key members of the Core, we should first figure out who we are and where we are going.  Do we try to set up a coffee shop meeting or just go for the ease of a virtual one?

I personally agree that our activities should probably be better coordinated with the NSHBA but not sure exactly what that would mean.

I know I haven't been active as a core Society member for a long while, but may I come to the meeting with Duncan if you have one?

Michelle, I think that it would be great to have you involved.  You have a broader provincial perspective than most – certainly much broader than my own.

This note also provides a chance to reach out again to the Core to encourage feedback from others regarding both association with the NSHBA and our own plans to move forward.  Thoughts from others?

Hi All,

Sorry it's taking me a while to respond to these conversations.

I'm juggling a lot right now, trying to advance my PhD, while keeping my son home part time to reduce his chances of COVID now that school masking is gone.

Anyway, all that to say that I can't take on any planning activities this year. I'm just too swamped. It's wonderful that NSHBA is reaching out, though, and it's a good time to take stock. Maybe we could do a survey?

Hello,
I am no longer a member of NSBHA, since Covid.  I am actually home right now with ten miserable days of Covid. Whatever this wave is, it is no fun! I have tried so hard to avoid it but my son got it from attending a funeral. I do not blame you Nicole. The mask mandates should not have been lifted before the end of school! Why? Being a Nurse, I certainly see good reason to wear one. I have worked with several clients who were positive and never got sick from Work!! Masks protect you and others. We will be wearing them at work for a long time.
I am happy that Roger and Michelle have offered to represent  HHBS, at NSBHA. I am not sure in what capacity but maybe they can keep us updated. I am presently operating as a volunteer bee rescuer at Hope for Wildlife, and will keep a hive there.
I hope you are all well and staying safe and healthy. If I can help in any way, please let me know. I am happy to keep the newer extractor here and see to it’s distribution and return. I also have the ‘Observation Hive’ here.
All the Best

Hello, all, and thanks for the update Lorraine! So sorry to hear that you're sick with COVID. Wishing you all the best for a speedy and full recovery.

We have also been very cautious, but it's looking like COVID might have caught us at last. Miles' classmate in the same group of desks tested positive yesterday, and today he is feeling sick. I'm so pissed off that this province didn't have the basic decency to do everything they could to protect children (and everyone else for that matter!). So criminal. I've been on a steady campaign of letter writing since protections were lifted, and the responses I've gotten are so cold-hearted -- I have zero respect for this government, and my respect for Dr Strang has taken a big hit. No integrity.

Anyway, rant over. I will also be wearing a mask for a long time. I have vulnerable in my family, and I will do everything I can to protect them.

Glad the newer extractor is safe with you and that you're able to continue taking care of it.

All the best,
Nicole

Hello Nicole,
I am so sorry and I agree with you 100%!! So stressful and such a small measure to protect each other. I hope your family stays safe, and hoping your sweet boy does well. You are a good and caring Mom🥰
Take care,
Lorraine

Thanks all for your responses regarding HHBS, but sorry to hear of COVID encounters.  Also, very understandable that Nicole has work priorities.  I think that we all thoroughly appreciate that which she does do for the Society.

It seems to me that with changing membership and priorities of members, we might need to re-think our goals and plans as a Society.  COVID certainly can take blame/credit for a lot of changes in how we all interact.  What do we want to do as a Society?  To me, the biggest advantage is that we are local and can therefore offer convenient workshops and services, like loaning out the extractors and soon to be acquired beevac.  We can also offer an urban perspective to the NSBA and liaise with planners in HRM.  Maybe a first step is simply to exchange ideas via email and perhaps informal chats.

With regards to NSBA outreach, does anyone want to take this on?  Lorraine mentioned that Michelle and I volunteered, although I had not yet done so.  I could consider volunteering, but certainly would be happy if someone else wanted to do it.  In fact, they may only want one representative and I certainly cannot think of anyone more qualified than Michelle, who knows the workings of our Society and also has a great provincial overview.  In any case, we probably need to write at least a brief reply to NSBA soon.

Hi all,

Duncan reached out to my personal email asking if we can connect with him as a society (he also noticed and is curious about our decline in activity).

I'll respond to him with a quick update about us still being in conversation about our future goals as a society. Do we want to send a Doodle poll or something to our membership to see if any urban beekeepers want to meet and some suggested timeslots? Perhaps we can round up some new energy to lead workshops for the society.

I'll send out a poll and include Duncan, if that sounds good with all of you!

Thanks, Jillian, for reaching out and keeping this thread alive.

I might suggest a two stage approach:

  1. First, contacting Duncan and explaining the obvious.  That is, we are in a bit of a transition right now, but we are certainly interested in having better coordination with NSBA.  As mentioned in past emails, Michelle is interested in this coordination.  I could also participate.  Anyone else interested?  In any case, we can be clear that with membership and leadership in flux, the representation may change in the future.
  2. I agree that a Doodle poll may help us move from scattered emails to actual meetings and plans for meetings and workshops.  Let’s do it!  Given past emails mentioning ongoing issues with COVID, should we plan a hybrid or completely online meeting?

A few further notes:

The split that Jillian gave us for a Society hive is doing well in my front yard.  This weekend I did my first in depth inspection and marked the queen.  Jillian was right that she is a beaut.

I picked up the BeeVac from Marcel.  Very nice unit with special parts designed and 3D printed by Marcel.  I have not yet set up a sign up sheet, but the unit is available to any member wanting to use it.  It is currently stored in my garage.

COVID really seemed to have hit the Society hard.  Without the ability to run workshops or even meet, I fear that we have really lost steam as a Society.  Hopefully, we will find a way to move forward.  Perhaps the planning meeting and liaison with NSBA will be a way or regaining our momentum.

Hello
I just purchased a new hive from Roger Morash today and installed it at Hope for Wildlife. I got Lily to take a video and I explained installing a nuc. If you would like, Jill I could send it to you via email and you can upload it.  It is brief, only 12 minutes long, but it would be nice to have a modern video. I am leaving to go away but Jim may be giving a little beginner lesson at HFW next week.
I am not sure how many people can attend but I maybe 2-3 people. It is a bit of a drive out there.
Hope this helps
Lorraine & Jim

I think that it would be great to add the video to the webpage.  Thanks.

Wonderful, Lorraine! Please send the video and I will upload it on the website (hopefully I can figure out how to do so with filing sizing, etc.).

I'll email Duncan right now and send out an email and poll to our membership about a meeting time.
