Hi there--I have a hive in Dartmouth that I'm not going to be able to look after in the spring. Do you know what the protocol would be for giving it to someone or moving it? I also have an empty society hive at my place.
Thanks
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Technically the hive should be inspected before it is transferred elsewhere.   I doubt Jason would come to Halifax to look at a single hive, but we should check with him about that.

WRT sale, you should make sure that the buyer/ new owner has a BK number.

Other than that, it's just a matter of moving the hive, which should be done after dark, all strapped and closed up for the trip.  I've moved lots of hives, so feel free to reach out if you want to talk it through.

I hope you're well!

Thanks Michelle. Do any beekeepers on this list want the hive if I can get it inspected?

Barb, sorry to hear that you will not be looking after your hive next year.  Would it be best if it went to the Society rather than just an individual?

I'm happy if the hive finds a good home! I love my ladies and want them to be safe and happy! Whatever I can do to help achieve that is what I'll do! I've appreciated your support over the years and beekeeping has been a true joy of my life :)

Barb,  you mentioned not being about to tend to the hive in the spring.  When do you want for it to be gone?  It might take a while to check with Jason.  Also, I have space to keep it as a society hive at least temporarily.  Unfortunately, l just had knee replacement surgery and cannot do lifting now.  How about around late February or early March after the snow but before too much activity.  As a society we can then decide on permanent location.
Oh and by the way, the society also owes you thanks for help over the years, storing extractors and hosting workshops along with keeping a society hive.  Thanks muchly.
Roger

Hello Yvon, Roger, Barbara, Jillian,

That sounds good to me Yvon, if you need any help, Jim would be happy to give you a hand. Just let us know. We have determined that our place in Purcell’s cove is not favourable for hives due to the rats and lack of forage.  If you need any help please let us know.
Thank you
Lorraine

Sounds like a plan!  Obviously, Jason cannot do an inspection at this time of year but someone should still write to him regarding preferred procedures.

Barb, I'm sorry you'll be moving.  Fortunately it sounds like your colony will be in good hands, though, and I hope you'll be able to keep bees again.

I'm not sure it's a good idea to notify Jason about moving the hive if you're not asking him to do an inspection.

It would be better to move the colony in early to mid-May, after a beekeeper in this group makes sure that it's free of disease.  I don't think it would be wise to transfer the hive to Yvon's yard until then.

I have a hive lifter, so you'd be welcome to borrow it.

Hello All,
I don’t think it is necessary to have an inspection to move hives, when hives are moved and wrapped for fall, I don’t think inspection is necessary. In spring you can officially transfer ownership and then schedule inspection.
The Bees may not take kindly to an inspection.
That’s my thoughts
Again if you need help lifting, let me know.
Lorraine

It sounds like Barbara is saying that she doesn't have a choice and needs to move the hive during this winter. Is that correct, Barbara?

Sorry I'm coming late to the conversation, but I'm glad that there's a temporary home with Yvon if the hive must be moved right away, with help from Jim to get the hive moved. In my opinion, the decision of whether or not to contact Jason now or in the spring should lie with Yvon, since he's taking on the hive. Barbara, do you have a sense of disease and pest load going into the fall? Did you check for mites and treat the hive if necessary?

Barbara, wishing all the best with your move!

Best,
Nicole

That would be the best move but my understanding is that it needed to be done sooner. I guess we need clarification on that from Barbara specially if it is already winterized and feeder added,
