check_string_dtype not in my version of h5py

Which version of h5py introduced the "check_string_dtype" function?  I'm using version 2.9.0 (from Anaconda) on a Mac running MacOS 10.14.6 and Python3.7.4 (also from Anaconda).

If "check_string_dtype" is too new for my version of h5py any ideas on how to code around it?  I want to raise an error if a dataset consists of a variable length string when I'm checking for CF compliance.

It was added in 2.10. There's an 'Older API' heading in the docs summarising what to do in older versions:

You can also look at the 2.9 docs - there's a link near the lower left corner to switch between versions:
