TITLE
Emot-ing with nature: The use of virtual nature to promote emotional and mental health
ABSTRACT
The therapeutic use of natural spaces is becoming a desired solution to help improve emotional health and, consequently, mental health. However, accessing nature can be challenging at times and not everyone is able to benefit from it. A promising alternative is the use of virtual nature, as studies show that real nature and virtual nature have similar restorative effects. Yet, more studies are needed to better understand this phenomenon. The project “Emot-ing with Nature” will contribute to the study of this topic by addressing three major identified research gaps, namely: (I) understand the different effects of virtual green and blue natural spaces, (ii) identify the optimal “dosage” of exposure to virtual nature and explore the long-term effects of such exposure, and (iii) test the use of virtual nature with clinical populations. The outcomes of this project will provide evidence-based recommendations for future virtual nature interventions to maximize its therapeutic potential.
